Indoor vs. Outdoor temperature split?

19 years ago

I decided to test the temp differences across both the indoor and outdoor unit of my 28 yr. old GE AC (SEER 5-6?)

Here is the info:

2.5 Ton GE condensor

Outside Air

in: 60% RH, 85 F

out: 45% RH 95 F

SPLIT = 10 F ?

Inside Air

return grill 75 F 50%RH

supply vent 57 F ?RH

SPLIT = 18 F

BTW, thermostat was set at 78F, (ithout fan nearby it will display 78F as the measured AND set temp, but not switch off. I think it's on crack!

I measured the inside split between the return and nearest vent rather than coil, 'cause I would have had to unseal all the foil tape, screws etc. to get to coil. The coil and metal duct that supply the vent I measured at are in the crawl space (78F 50%RH) and are wrapped tightly in R-6.

Is the drop across the condensor low? What do these numbers mean? Our system gobbles elec. so I was curious to see whether you think the condensor is struggling.
