Wall covering!

I'm in an apartment rental with strict rules on painting, wallpapering, etc., but I really want to do something about the glaring white in the eating space/living room (one room about 16 x 20). My only real option is to use fabric as a wall covering with cornstarch to stick it on, so that's what I'm gonna do.

Furniture is a little sparse for the amount of space, with mostly medium-hue wood and lots of cream color, with a bit of light green and peach. I also have red curtains bordering on burgundy, which I'm not going to replace. The room is North-facing, with high 10' ceilings. Oh, yeah-- and there's moulding that will leave about 1' near floor and ceiling, so I'm working with the middle 8' of wall here (so it's gotta look good right next to white).

My goals are to make the space feel more intimate and less sterile (with all the white). However, I don't want to go the other extreme and make it too dark, since it doesn't get much sunlight. Also, I don't want to clash with the red curtains or do anything crazy color-wise-- just comfortable.

Thanks
