Corner prep sinks...question

If you have a corner prep sink...is it difficult to use in the corner? Do you wish you had put it on a straight run of cabinetry? Would it be better/worse, if you had angled the countertop, in front of the sink?

I plan to have a prep sink, in the baking area, but I think in the plan it's too close to the oven/microwave...and wonder if it would work better, in the corner. If I moved the sink to the corner, there would be about 5' of space on one side and about 2'6" on the other side. I don't have to have all cabinets below, could be open shelves...if an angle would be easier.

This area will be open to the keeping room and will have stools, with a raised bar. Marble on the baking area and wood on the bar area. Quick picture...sorry, I don't have just the kitchen, but this is that part of the plan. Thanks in advance :)

I think it would be better to keep the sink where you have it rather than placing it the corner.

I used to have a similar prep area in our old house (sink on one side, range on the other, with a corner in between) and the corner was a remarkably useful area to prep in -- easy to spread out fruits and veggies to dry on paper towels after washing, etc. Putting the sink right into the corner would be a waste, IMO, and would also shorten your useful run of prep counter to the left of it.

I think the space looks nicely usable the way you have it above.

Taggie- Thanks! I was worried the sink might be too close to the oven. Good point about prepping in the corner...I was thinking more about prep space, on both sides of the sink.

If you're right handed, I'd move it. I do the occasional pot scrub out or when you have a stubborn potato that you want to lay down on the counter and scrub, it'll be annoying not to have any counter to the right.

I think they work well in a corner - buehl has hers there, but you might think about doing an angle base instead. With an angled base, you can get closer to the sink. When its a right angle, the side of the angle keep your body back from the edge.

Use a couple of big pots and try sitting them in the same relative position as the oven to your existing sink. A day or two of trying it out will prove it one way or the other.

Bmore- Yes, I am right handed...and I was wondering about an angled counter. I think that would work well and look better with the raised counter area, too.

If I do the angle, what about base cabinets? I can always do open shelves (for mixing bowls, etc.) if the angle makes things too complicated :)

Anyone know if it's better/worse to cut marble at two forty five degree angles or one ninety degree angle?

My prep sink is in a corner of the peninsula - similar to what you have drawn but not angled. It's an actual peninsula with the sink in the corner. I love having it there because I can talk to people who are sitting at the peninsula and look out at the view if I want to rather than always facing into the wall. I may not always do it but I wanted the ability to do so.

I then have about 5 1/2' of counter to the right for prep space and then the range. My peninsula is 5 1/2' long with an overhang and stools. Because of the angle of the sink the front part of the counter is 2 1/2' long and it is where my under counter micro wave is and then a drawer under that. I love having my MW there because it can't be seen from the eating area or the sitting area.

My clean-up sink is where yours is drawn but my fridge is where you have drawn your range.

Unfortunately no pics because I am tech challenged.

Blfenton- I didn't think about talking to people, while using the sink. That's a really good point! I wish you had pictures...maybe later? :)

Another question...would it be better to switch the fridge and oven/microwave? I can adjust the peninsula, if we nee a little more room, but it makes sense that we open the oven much less often than the fridge. This also brings the fridge closer to the living room (and TV) for grabbing drinks/snacks.

If we switch the fridge, I'm thinking the prep sink in the corner makes a lot more sense. Any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks for taking the time, to give your input :)

Mydreamhome- It is Summerfield's drawing! What a wonderful friend to have on GW :)

Thanks for the input, on the sink. I didn't even think about the seam. Great point.

As for the fridge, we'd usually be cutting through the dining room, from the living room to the kitchen...so that's one reason I've been thinking about switching them. The keeping room will be great, but mostly for people (especially nieces and nephews) to visit, while we're cooking/cleaning veggies/baking cookies, etc.
