bed sheets

Its time for me to get some real bed sheets and all the ensuing bedding paraphernalia , but I'm confused about how to select them. I have enough trouble matching my tie and shirt, so for now, let's ignore the decor of the rest of the bedroom and just focus on the bed sheet, the pillows, duvet, etc...

I'm assuming that some pieces are supposed to be different but I'm confused about what pieces are supposed to match each other and which pieces aren't.

Are the fitted bedsheet, flat bed sheet, and pillows all supposed to be the same? And, then, you're supposed to select a different color and texture for the duvet?

I saw some bed sheets on clearance at Pottery Barn so I can't return them if I buy it, and want to make sure I don't make an expensive mistake. Since its a clearance, they might not have all the items and I don't want to buy some items but find out that I needed to also buy other items in that pattern as well.

They were white with this two line of blue embroidery around the border. If I got this pattern fitted bed sheet, then I'd also need to get that same exact pattern for the pillows and flat bed sheet but not the duvet covering? For the duvet covering, I'd need to get that in solid blue in the exact shade as the blue embroidery?

I think I saw this exact bed sheet pattern in a previous Pottery Barn or Williams-Sonoma home catalog maybe one or two years ago. But, I can't seem to find that picture anywhere to see what they matched it with. I guess PB doesn't keep a cache of their older catalogs anywhere. If anybody has that older catalog, could you please post that picture?

Also, does anybody know if PB bed sheets are any good? With bed sheets, I'm not sure how you can tell if its any good or not. Those PB bed sheets had a 400 thread count, but at the same time, that's not always the most reliable thing to look at either. What are you supposed to look for?

The sheets you are talking about sound very much like the brand called "Hotel". Which are sold also at Restoration Hardward.

I have bought mine at T.J.Maxx or Marshalls at a fraction. But they are not the ones with the stripe, just so you know. But I have seen the stripe sheet you are talking about there. But that takes a lot of searching and waiting and I doubt you want to do that.

In general, you should buy sheets that match (fitted & flat sheet and pillow cases) all match. Then of course you pick out a duvet cover or comforter and perhaps some shams that coordinats with your sheets. Be it one color or a paisley or whatever.

I have a 420 tread count sheet, which washes up nice and sometimes comes out a bit wrinkled but smooths away when is put on the bed.

I rarely shop at PB because I think their sheets and candles and accessories are way too high, but that's me. Of course I like some of their sofa's.

Okay, back to sheets. A lot of people spend major $$$$$ on sheets, I don't. And I think my white sheets look like a man's fancy dress shirt without the cufflinks. lol Okay, I'm getting a little sickening.

I'm not sure what you are suppose to look for considering sheets. I generally look at the color and thread count is all.

Many people on here shop at PB and could probably get the exact picture of the sheets you are talking about.

I just stick with white or taupe sheets. It's so much easier, you don't have to try to match up with the rest of the room. I like smooth sheets ( can't stand pilling) so try to buy a decent brand with a fairly high TC.

Have you looked on Ebay? I bought some RL sheets there a while back and they are very nice. The price was nice too!

TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross...they all carry nice sheets at a much better price then you'll find at some speciality stores.

Dillards has 1/2 off of sheets through tomorrow the 19th including Ralph Lauren. Get all cotton sheets. White is good so you can bleach them but many of the colors available are very nice.

JC Penney is always having sales. I can't remember which ones I purchased it's been so long ago. I know DD bought a set of 600 thread count, and after they were washed felt rough~I personally like 400 thread count and have had no problem after washing and using bleach.

I *only* buy ivory sheets and towels. That makes it simple for all the bedrooms/baths, and the color always looks fresh. ;o)

I'm like that too even though I like the PB look, have two of their books, and always read through their catalogs. Even if people don't buy from PB, PB still has a major influence on people's tastes.

I like the look of those sheets, but probably wouldn't have paid for them at full retail given how much PB costs. Its not so much the cost of PB, but concerns about their quality and what I'm paying for. Am I buying quality or PB's marketing? I remember reading a article about furniture, and how experts gave a thumbs down to PB- PB's stuff was painted veneer that would scratch off.

That's why I wanted to be able to know what to look for in buying sheets. Has there been a thread about what's good and what's not at PB, Restoration Hardware, etc...?

Like Brutuses, I am becoming very aware of the chemicals being put in cottons and many other fabrics that we sleep on and wear. I don't have PB sheets but I have a 10year old duvet cover that has held up well. I purchased some great sheets from Sferra and Gaiam. I have included a link to Gaiam. I love their sateen and percale sheets. They always have some colors on clearance depending on the season. These are really high quality and wonderful cotton density. I usually buy only flat sheets so I am obsessed with Linen which may be out of your price range at this point.

About the PB, restoration hardware quality, I really don't know but I think they make better quality than some and poorer quality items in certain areas. I think people are sometimes budget conscious to the point of being penny wise and pound foolish. Restoration hardware and PB towels are well rated. I am a bargain hunter but I have specifics in mind and don't mind waiting for it to go on sale or clearance.

    Best of luck!

Speaking of RH. I forgot to mention I just recently purchased some sateen sheets from them that are organic and made in Italy. They are very nice and were on sale of course. It was for the guest bed which is single and with postage the total was $136 for the set. The sheets were a bargain. I got screwed on the shipping. LOL

Not all sferra sheets are made in Italy; I bought some on Neiman's website and after I washed them and made the bed, I noticed the label said made in china, they're very good though.

If you have a Tuesday Morning near you, check there. They carry a lot, including the Hotel brand and Sferra.

I've never heard of Sffera before. The little I know of fine Italian bedding, I think of Frette or Pratesi. I'm not sure how much of that is marketing or if Sffera is a notch below those other two.

But, looked up Sferra's website and went to one of their store locations today after work. Unfortunately, turns out that wasn't their retail location and I'd have to go to their retail channel which is a good drive from home and not on the way to work either.

So, I then checked out Frette's store which was wasn't as far away as Sferra. But, it didn't really have a sale. Well, it had a sale, but not on its lower-priced Hotel collection. And, even then, I wasn't a big fan of the black stripes for their Hotel collection.

Does anyone have any experience with Matouk? I need some good sheets for a full-sized bed and there aren't so many options for that size. I know that Horchow and Neiman's carry them, but only online, not in our local store. I hate buying linens without seeing them first, since thread count is so meaningless anymore.

Frette and Pratesi are all good Italian brands. There are some higher quality items from Sferra and some items on the same level as Frette and Pratesi. I usually purchase my linens and Down items from Dewoolfson Down. They have a limited selection of manufacturers that they carry but they are a great resource.

    Writersblock,
Matouk is a great line but can be expensive in some areas.

    Best of luck!
