Ceiling colors

Okay, my kitchen after a few changes late in the game is basically complete. But I just had the ceiling painted today and it's a kind of a sky blue, really makes the place feel taller which is great. Plus the beams are white. But I was wondering what colors you girls/guys have painted your ceiling?

A friend came over and saw it and wasn't thrilled she kind of said something like "why isn't it white?" am I being too trendy??

    what? no pictures???

Mine is a light gray, to the untrained eye it's white.

But hey, look what I did in my 2 story foyer:

We are going to paint our dining room a sky blue, and maybe our master bedroom...depending how the DR turns out. I'd love to see pics...very few people do it!

Who says ceilings have to be white? Other than your friend?

Most of my ceilings aren't white. Some are the same color as the walls, some are a tint of the walls (same color lighter) and a couple are a slight contrast.

In general, light colors work well for ceilings because they tend to recede, making the space look taller. Having the same color on the ceiling, when it's low, can make it look taller as well because it hides the transition from wall to ceiling. It's also a good choice for where there isn't an obvious demarcation, such as a crown molding, or 90 degree top corner. Great for cathedral ceilings for this reason--makes them soar.

Sky blue is a very traditional color for ceilings, at least for the last 600 years, for the obvious reason that it calls to mind the firmament. Often there will be clouds and all painted in as well, mural style. Just having the blue is a cleaner, more contemporary look, but definitely informed by centuries of custom.

My own kitchen ceiling is a tint of the wall color, but it had to be close to white to reflect indirect lighting. It's kind of peach.

I did a tropical/retro inspired makeover in one of our bohemian area's cottagey kitchens. We did a bright (and I do mean BRIGHT!) turquoise/teal ceiling (Behr Pacific Sea Teal). We used the same color in a 4x4 ceramic tile backsplash. The 1960's plywood stained fake walnut slab cabinets were painted a soft yellow and the counters were retro white patterned laminate (Formica Virvarr, I think). The floor was a retro looking Marmoleum in a turquoise blend (Rafting River), but not quite as bright. White walls and lots of tropical prints and fabrics completed the look. She was a nurse who worked 2nd shift and always came home in the dark to a dark depressing kitchen and she wanted something bright and cheerful. I had actually suggested the lightest color on the paint strip for the ceiling, but she went for the darkest. It turned out pretty fab---with a bit of upgraded lighting.

Don't listen to your friend; a sky blue ceiling is great. Might I add that you are designing your house for your own enjoyment (not hers) and white ceilings are kind of boring, except when used in the way that plllog described.

Plus, it's only paint. You can change it if you get tired of any color.

That gives you a good idea of my kitchen, but I'm hiding everything til I get my real photos taken :P

    Oh, that's HORRIBLE!

Just kidding. White would be totally wrong in that kitchen! The blue is very nice, and I'm not just saying that because my kitchen ceiling is blue.
