Rug in Kitchen

I have a beautiful rug, a gorgeous rug, a rug that was a wedding gift from my in laws based on the color palette of a house I lived in...what feels like forever ago. It's a pale yellow Oushak (?) from Turkey. It was purchased for a dining room. Thing is, on most of my main floor, the colors are very saturated, so the rug doesn't feel "grounded". However, my kitchen colors are creamy walls, yellow cabinets, walnut countertop, with views (in the spring and summer) of leafy trees. I'm thinking of using the rug in the kitchen. Yes, it's a pale color. But, it's a Very Good Rug which means it cleans up very well. I am NOT a messy cook. And, how much difference is there between eating with red wine and cooking with it? Eating red sauce or cooking it? We will also have a rather large work table in the center of the kitchen. It'll probably go out to be cleaned annually or so. I guess the only real concern would be...raw chicken juice or something. But again, I'm not messy and I have a pretty contained prep and cooking zone. We have pets. This rug has seen some scary things. Need I say more?

People seem split on whether this is crazy talk or a fine idea. Either the rug gets used in the kitchen or it goes into storage. Frankly, you can't see enough of it under a king sized bed and I hate to just see the edges peeking out. And I hate to just have it cleaned and put it into storage. Since you all think of all things kitchen, I thought I'd put it out there for you.

Here's my mood board:

And here's the rug:

Crazy? You decide. I await your opinions and feedback.

I would use it for all the reasons you listed. It would look great with your palette. Why have something you love but can't/don't use? It would be a shame to tuck it away in storage.

I think you should definitely use it. It's beautiful.

Or- just send it to me as it has all the right colors for my kitchen, or dining room, or -phooey. Just use it ;-)

It's gorgeous. Use it and enjoy it.

How can you NOT use it? Love your choices and esp that tile!

Oh, the knobs. Can you share info on the knob?

I can picture that rug in there with the Shiloh cabs and all your stuff.. beautiful!

Your moodboard and rug are both beautiful and belong together.

I used ScotchGuard Carpet and Rug spray on a couple nice runner rugs in my galley kitchen. Well, not nice like they're from Turkey like yours but nice to me for putting in a kitchen. Whether it's the mfg (Shaw) coating or the ScotchGuard, the rugs clean up beautifully with a damp cloth. This includes things like a dried-on errant cranberry from a quite sticky champagne cranberry compote so I feel much better about having the rugs in the kitchen.

Yes, they smelled for a day (I sprayed them in the garage). Maybe you don't like this type of non-green product but I thought it might be helpful.

    cheers

The knob is from Pottery Barn. It's one of my China purchases ::cough:: It's from the Equestrian line. The cup pull, I will say, is not suitable for a kitchen really. It's quite difficult to operate with adult sized fingers. And, I only needed one and you have to buy four. So I went with a black iron pull for my spice pullout. It matches the pull on the drawer of the work table. It's a square backplate with a ring pull.

I'm feeling better about using the rug. I figured people who will accept that marble is actually a viable countertop material would be okay with a rug you might have to be a tad mindful of in the kitchen.

Life is too short to keep nice things in storage. The rug is beautiful and special to you. I also vote to use it and enjoy it!

Agree with all above! And I LOVE that tile!

Looks like it was made to be in your kitchen. Go for it.

I have two suggestions. First is that you share what that stunningly gorgeous, drool worthy tile is and where to get it.

Second is that you roll up that rug and send it to ME!!!!! : ) No? Ok, well in that case I vote for using it. Really what's the point of having a beautiful rug if it's in storage? Enjoy it.

Use the good china. Use the crystal. Use that rug. Life is short. Enjoy it, you obviously love it. Children who are raised with nice things learn to take care of nice things.

Yes. Use it. Enjoy it. Life is too short to keep something beautiful like that in storage. Can't wait to see all your yummy elements together!

I love it. And the silk/wool Iranian carpet that I received from inlaws as a wedding present sits in our family room, where our 2 crazy boys have done every possible damage to it, without any lasting problems. Once a year we send it out and it comes back looking like a beautiful new carpet.

BUT I will also confess that in our current pre-renovation galley kitchen, we use a small 3x5ish sized carpet that came as an extra with one of our nicer carpets, and I don't love having a rug with pile there because it makes cleanup more obscure and difficult. I have a 100 year old kilim in our breakfast room that sees tons of spills, and it definitely cleans up more easily. I've been planning to find a kilim for my new kitchen.

For me, if it were a choice between storage and using it in the kitchen, the kitchen would win hands down. But definitely go into it with an awareness of the occasional unpleasantness of cleaning up spills.

That's a beautiful rug that would look awesome in my house :) but will look absolutely beautiful in your kitchen. You'd be crazy to just store it.
