Decorating help with new bathroom remodel

Hi all,

We just redid the tile, tub and fixture in our late 1940's home. This is the hallway bath, which we did in black and white versus the yellow and black it was previously done in. Everything is in the same place as before, and we have tried to stay with the basic feel of how the bathroom was. I realize the fixtures (Kohler replicas) are older vintage style than our bath, but still trying to keep the vintage feel.

My question is the walls. We had thought about putting up a black and white toile wallpaper. Would this be to much? Right now the walls are painted a flat Behr light gray as I was anticipating wallpaper, but I'm rethinking that. Perhaps paint would be better, or maybe the wallpaper. I have no decorating sense at all, so I would appreciate ideas and opinions.

Here is my bath:

Here is a similar style bath with toile wallpaper that I like. It is someone else 1930 vintage bathroom in NewYork.

So paint or wallpaper? Color suggestions?

I vote for wallpaper. A black and white combo! Your inspiration pic is very much like what you now have. :0)

I dont care for the gray you have now. I think either you need to go a more deeper gray to get away from the "dirty" look of the light gray against the white or go with the wall paper. My vote would be wall paper.

What a lovely job you did picking out the tile--very vintage and yet somehow very fresh. If you like the wallpaper, go with it--it would look fantastic.

    Loving the toile here!!

That looks great! I would do the wall paper.

Thanks everyone, I so appreciate the input. I should have clarified that the paint color that is on there is a Behr primer/paint and would not be the final color. I just had to grab something to put up quickly. I put up the primer/flat thinking I would wall paper.

    I guess now I will...thanks all!

I love toile! Please post a picture when you're done. Love what you've done so far!

Offering another point of view on the wallpaper...I would never put wallpaper in a bathroom due to moisture and cleanliness issues. We have wallpaper in our powder room and it looked pretty good for a couple of years but, going on 5 years now and it doesn't look good. People are in there with dirty hands and water gets splashed around and it shows on the wallpaper.

However, i love the look of the toile. You might consider getting a toile stencil and paint the walls with a toile look instead of using wallpaper. When we redo our powder room I'll be doing something along these lines...using paint to apply a damask pattern.

    Love the black toile!

A vote for wallpaper. Just skimmed the other posts, but feel like gray will make your bathroom look like a public restroom. The toile will look great!

Best of luck. Please post a pic the finished bathroom.

I like toile, but here is a thought: you have a lot of patterns going on in a small room already. Would another pattern be a plus for you?
Personally, I am a little pattern shy. I probably would paint the room in a medium green or some other color to play up the nice white wood work.
    Nice room!

I think that toile wallpaper would look beautiful in your bathroom. One reason is that toile as a pattern is French, and your bathroom tile is the Paris Metro style, and the combination is a bit flirty. I certainly would not put gray paint in this room. The gray makes the sparkling black and white look dingy and, as Work in Progress wrote, it has a public bath appearance. Another vote for your wallpaper!

Vote for black and white toile! I think it would look devine (well, as devine as a bathroom can look). LOL

Oh, it really does have a public restroom look with the grey primer on the walls! The gray was only temporary, but now it is making me work quicker on making a decision. I started laughing when I read that response, because it was tooo funny and tooo true!

I'm really wanting the black and white toile paper, but dh is leaning towards a black and white damask.

andrea mentioned using a stencil to get the effect, is this possible? I found some really lovely ones in the stencil link below.

I will post some of the wallpapers I'm considering too. Thank you so much for your help!!

While I like the idea of the stenciling if you don't mind the work, I don't care for any of the ones in your link. They're all too heavy, not going to produce at all the breezy effect of the toile in your first post. Look for something that looks almost anemic in the sample size, because when you do it all over the walls, it's a lot more than you think it's going to be.

writersblock, good advice. I definitely want to keep it light for sure. The bathroom is only about 10 feet long, so I need to keep it simple. I had up 3 stencil links and posted the wrong one, the page I meant to post is smaller lighter.

I will post the wallpaper designs in a bit. Thanks again.

You mention your small room, so I'll dissent on the toile for the walls. With your floor pattern it seems a bit much. How about toile curtains on the window and a wall color of your choice, maybe even white. Then you could use a punch of red, bright blue, or even yellow towels in there to jazz it up.

My two cents are that you do not actually have that much going on in your bathroom right now except for a few black accent tiles on the floor. The toile will definitely add punch and elegance to the room and since it's so small, it shouldn't be a big deal if you feel the need to freshen the look in 5 or so years. Stencils will not give you the same warmth and style that are evident in your inspiration pic. Go for the wallpaper.

I love the wallpaper. I wouldn't worry about too much pattern. You can see the checkerboard print on your inspiration pic and I'm sure it looks great! Good luck!
