Sitting room mostly finished...

Here are some pics of our sitting room, which has taken the place of the dining room next to the kitchen. The dining room was a little too small, so we moved the dining table into the next room and turned the old dining room into a sitting room so my husband can hang out there while I'm in the kitchen. It also works well when we have guests because I can finish up stuff in the kitchen and still be part of the conversation.

We took the wall down that separated this room from the kitchen, here's a pic of the wall from inside the kitchen, and then after we took it down.

......

Here's what it looks like now... next step is to install an island.

Pic of the whole room from the kitchen. The walls look a little olive in this picture, but they are not that yellow.

The wool rug that the dog keeps peeing on. Sigh. Got it at World Market.

This basket I got at HomeGoods, it's doubling as an end table just big enough for my plant and a coaster for a drink.

I also got this glass flower from HomeGoods... this room has kind of a mono-chromatic thing going on... the furniture, walls and accents are all some shade of green. This is the picture that shows the most true wall color.

This is my gallery wall and where the color comes in... these are all prints/postcards of watercolors from various places I've visited in Europe. We are going to Ireland in May so I hope to bring back two more to add to the collection. The small colored frames are from the dollar store, the rest are various styles of wood, but all in dark stain. I bought them over the years at Hobby Lobby, Michaels and just got the last two from Kohls.

All that's left is some decorative pillow covers. I have a really cool shirt that my friend gave me that I am going to turn into a pillow cover and then I bought an eggplant colored curtain from Walmart that is all one color, but has embroidered stripes on it, and I'm going to use that to make a couple more pillow covers. The flowers on the chair are eggplant.

Anyway! It's nice to have it done... I can't even imagine anymore what it was like with that wall there, LOL!

Wow! It looks fantastic! So nice and open. We opened a wall from our kitchen to dining room, it makes all the difference in the world.
I just discovered World Market. I had never heard of it.

Pretty rug- good luck with it and the dog.

I love it! Cozy and individual and elegant. The sofa pillows are sure to be a nice touch of color.

You might consider one small chair diagonally opposite the brown one, to create a facing-each-other conversation area, but that could certainly wait until just the right chair shows up and says it would be perfect. If there's enough room to pass - or maybe a backless chair-coffee table-ottoman kind of thing that can shift places.

Congratulations on a beautiful job on a budget (and the budget doesn't show.)

PS That's a great little couch - where's it from?

We did the same thing when we reno'd our kitchen (also vaulted the ceiling in the kitchen and old DR at that time). Our old DR is now our living room, and the old LR is now our DR. We LOVE this set-up!

Yours looks beautiful--a cozy and inviting spot to hang out before dinner or anytime.

    Enjoy it!

    Thanks everyone!

birdgardner - that chair is actually dark green with eggplant flowers... it's hard to tell in the photo because everything is yellowed by the light. The corner diagonally opposite that chair has a little TV in it right now, but that may move to the other corner, so I could possibly put a chair there, but I would want it to be kind of small and low-profile. The plan is to have an island put in, and then there would be counter stools at the island, so people could sit there as well. Both the chair and the love seat are from Sofa Mart.

Thanks everyone! It really helped to see so many inspiration rooms on this forum... even though everyone has a different style, you can pull certain elements from other people's style into your own!
