If you were to match lumen for lumen you'll be somewhat close or get a good idea. Keep in mind that fluorescent spreads it out well where the track lights might focus in just one area,, depends...

Look for replacement bulbs and their lumen ratings and add up the lumens.

those 40 watt fluorescents are around 3,000 lumens each so x 4 = 12,000 lumens. Which is really quite a bit of light.

So, would you have a recommendation of any other type of lighting to use? The ceiling is drywalled in this area, so we can't run new wiring. Anything we use will have to be based where the fluorescent is based. (I'm not sure of the correct terminology to explain this. I hope I'm describing it well enough.) The area is used to set up several tables for family dining during holidays and I just feel the fluorescent gives such a cold feeling.

Trying to get as much or more light without running a lot of new wiring around the room, from something other than fluorescents, is a pretty hopeless quest. Don't despair, though; you can improve the situation. I would replace the fixture with one that uses 32-watt T8 bulbs, and then experiment with the better-quality bulbs, which are available in a range of color temperatures. There are very nice fluorescent bulbs available in the T-8 size, if you're not too cheap about it.

I would echo Jon's ideas. Either get a nice new flo fixture or change the ballast to an electronic one. This will eliminate the flicker and allow you to use triphosphor T8 lamps (a bit more expensive and harder to find but worth it). Fit type 830 lamps for a nice warm light with very good (~82CRI) color rendering. I think you'll find the result MUCH more inviting.

FWIW, my workplace recently replaced some older 830 lamps with their new, purchased-in-huge-quantities "cool white" and everyone there is really annoyed. The warm, pleasant light we used to have has given way to a greyish, cold, and depressing light (like a cloudy day). The type of fluorescent lamp really makes that much difference.
