The washer manual (online) does mention king-size comforters, saying that such items should be washed separately. But I don't see any comforter/bulky cycle or option. If the machine doesn't know it's washing a bulky item, I'd be concerned that it wouldn't be wetted completely. Even more so, considering the short wash cycle times listed in the manual. But maybe the online manual isn't entirely accurate, and the actual machines do make provision for comforters.

If you own a particular comforter you'll want to wash, you should try putting it in the washer in the store, and make sure you can close the door easily.

i was looking at these myself but decided to stick with my original choice (miele 4840 & matching dryer). i would have purchased these solely because i would be able to stack them. i thought the steam feature sounded interesting until i got some great responses to my thread that pretty much knocked it off as just another useless addition to the bells and whistles that do nothing but drive up cost. another biggie: electrolux is made by frigidaire. when i called my appliance dealer asking about these units and said he'd never go with them over the miele's. it took a lot of convincing but i'm happy i've switched back. you are unable to find any recommendations because they're brand new. it's always tougher. they could be the best washer/dryer combo on the market but it's too early to tell ...and i'm not willing to be the guinea pig. not to say i'd never buy anything without a long and outstanding history, as i'm also purchasing the freedom towers by thermador. they've not been around very long either but i have far more confidence in a thermador product having owned them before. oh, almost forgot: i did read that the electrolux models are in fact "appropriate" for a second floor install. good luck, whatever you decide.

I agree that without a history it is hard to tell. But for what ever worth it is we are a family of two right now. Me and my husband.Planning to have kids sometime in near future. So not many loads to wash. Once a week it is two loads.
My main concern is the capacity and having to wash woolens. I right now have a small washer and it is tough i think impoosible is the right word to wash my queen size sheets and comforters. And in future I am planning on buying a king size bed.
My max budget for both washer and dryer is 2000 bucks.
Also any damage to floors is a big no no.So second floor consideration is also ther.
    can anyone help me here?

Right now I have a Maytag Neptune. Yesterday I washed a queen size brocaded(not sure this is the right word)comforter in my Neptune. It doesn't have a comforter setting, but it came out thoroughly wet and clean. I've never tried any of the king size comforters because the ones I have are really big and they are supposed to be dry cleaned. I know at least one of them would not fit. Even the dry cleaner has a problem with getting it in their commercial machines. That said, washing king sheets is not a problem. I don't know what size it is but I would think at least a 3.6 and probably a 3.8.

Take the comforter to to the store and see if it will fit in the model you are looking at. That will answer your question about what size, if any, will work with what you are trying to wash.

As far as budget, you'll be over just a bit with the Electrolux, but they are probably as good a product as any other washer. From what I understand they've been making Frigidaire's for a long time.

Personally, I am waiting for my Neptune to die, it's on it's last legs. I am still leaning toward getting a Samsung. This machine with the VRT says it can go on the second floor. It is suppose to be the quietest washer, and that is the number one issue for me.

I think they probably all do a good job, it's just how many bells and whistles do you want. My only concern are where the units are actually being made. Some countries, I won't mention names, seem to have quality problems. I like the idea of Bosch being made in the USA, but to me, the machine is just ugly. I know, dumb reason.

I don't think the ability to wash a king-size comforter should be the driving factor in your washer & dryer purchase, especially if you don't own one. You don't have to buy a king-size comforter when you buy a king-size bed. But the complete lack of a comforter cycle would be a problem for me, personally, when buying a new washer. A new washer might be more frugal than housefairy's Neptune, and so might not wash a comforter so well on a normal cycle.

Speaking of comforters: The manual for my 4.0 cu ft Miele says it can wash up to an 84"x88" comforter, or "full size". We've washed those with fine results. We gave up on washing a thick "full/queen" comforter, because the door didn't close easily and I didn't want to risk messing up the door boot. But other people here, with similarly-sized front-loaders, report that they can wash thick king-size comforters, which I don't understand.

King-size SHEETS are no problem at all in our machine. You must have a pretty small washer now, if queen-size sheets are a problem.

i do and belive me even one load has to be carefully thought.Thats why i am so stuck up with large size.I talk about king size coz i know for sure i will have two master rooms and we plan to have king size beds in both.I dont want to get stuck with those beddings and regret after i purchase one.
How can i find out if the washer dryer are compatible for second floor.Do you think mounting it on some kind of support like a wooden plan with rubber legs would take off some vibration issues?

    last modified: 10 years ago

Shwetagarg, just so you know, the Neptune is a front loader. It does have a stain cycle, extra rinse buttons. I don't know if the useage of water in the new washers is less. If you open in mid cycle water does not come out the door. So I would think it couldn't be much different. Mine sets on standard wood construction and used to be very quiet. It is on the first floor, right off the family room. And until the bearings started going, it used to run without having to close the laundry room door.

My neighbor has LG FL upstairs and Whirlpool FL downstairs. Before those she went thru two Neptunes. She says her LG's are by far the quietest. The Neptunes were quieter than the Whirlpool. However, they built the laundry room upstairs, so I am sure that it was built to deal with any vibration. The LG's set on honed marble but they are not on pedestals. She has a counter over the top.

Maybe you can kind of decide what washer you want, then post to see if anyone has them on the second floor. If you do, try to find out the year of the house. Hopefully construction standards were fairly uniform (probably not) through out the country. The definite differences will be insulation and outside materials. But, maybe that way you'll be able to compare with your own.

When you buy, make sure you can return if the vibration is an issue. And check how much they will charge you to make these changes. Also some go by 30 days of purchase, not delivery. Read the fine print, don't depend on the salesman to tell you the truth.

Ours is a new construction. So i guess i wouldnt know until i buy.Dont know if sears will take it back. But i will make sure to mention them.
Dont know if i really need all the bells and whistles.

Get the Samsung then you will not have any worries about vibration, plus they are 4.5 cu. ft. so very little difference in these and Electrolux. The Electrolux does have "gel packs" placed in the right places to balance it out and it is supposed to be a smooth spinning machine also.
For my money I would go with Samsung. They are already proven to not vibrate.

shwetagarg, the Electrolux pair would cost you far more than $2K - more like $3K. Pedestals, if desired, would add even more to that.

Maytag has come out with a new FL which has the same 4.7 cu ft capacity AND has the VRT techonology, which means it is ideal for a second floor. I saw it advertised on sale at HHGregg and Best Buy last weekend. There is also a matching dryer.

You could definitely wash a king-size comforter in that washer with no problem. I am the grateful owner of a Maytag Bravos HE TL which has 4.6 cu ft capacity, and I wash king-size comforters with ease. Since mine has a Bulky cycle, I'm confident the new FL has that too. HTH

yes, the electrolux are coming in priced higher than the mieles (at least a the price i'm getting them for.) i'm getting the full size duets (i THINK) for the mudroom. dealer is selling them to me for $658 each.

Well I did think of Maytag...since all commercial washers are maytag i thought it should be great for home also. But sears did not have much collection.
So i should look for VRT technology?well thats a great help. I am making a note and will definately take a look this weekend.
I am reading a lot about HE detergents and stuff....what is HE?

    HE means High Efficiency.

Does Sears not have that new Maytag FL yet? I know Best Buy and HHGregg have them here. I would think HD and probably Lowe's have them now, too.

Atleast sears did not.Have to check out these other places.Do u have a specific model i can do my research on

Shwetagarg, the Electrolux has two different models. One has the wave touch panel and the other an IQ panel. Basically the same with different electronics and more options. The IQ will run you about 2100 without pedestals. However, they also charge more for the pedestals. Sears is giving a rebate of $150 if you buy two Electrolux products. So if you didn't buy the pedestals you would be under your budget(with the rebate).

Maytag was bought out by Whirlpool. I do think Samsung is making the controls for the new Maytag, don't know about the other parts. Personally, my experience with Maytag customer service is I wouldn't have another Maytag appliance if they gave it to me. This was on a purchase of the Maytag H2O French door refrigerator when they first became available. The thing was clapping it's ice maker shute. It wouldn't shut up and we were suppose to listen to it for a week before anyone authorized by Maytag could even look at the problem. I called another repair shop. Apparently this is a common problem and something the average homeowner could disconnect until a repairman arrived. Maytag should have least told me how to silence the beast. They were basically very rude with a who cares attitude. This was during the time that Whirlpool was buying Maytag. So possibly the people were getting reassigned. But whatever the reason, I won't buy another Maytag product.

So i Finally made th trip to Lowes. And here is some more info on electrolux...
The guy there is also not so sure about them as he says they are only 5 months old. He ended his sentence "i wouldnt buy it".
The machine is not based on VRT Technology instead there is some thing called as Perfect Balance System
4.7cubic foot will easily take king size.According to the guy there ...anything above 4.0 will take king size.
He recommends Samsung instead of Electrolux but it is $500 more than electrolux
It seems Electrolux will not be the quite machine as compared to samsung.
The Heavy Duty option in the Electrolux will take the beddings
I dont think we will go with pedestals as it will cross our budget but if we do not sure how much will it impact the vibrations.
    would like more inputs
Oh one more thing..the samsung was a breath taker!

Hmm....I am not sure your helpful hardware man at Lowes knows what he is talking about.

How does he know how quiet it will be against Samsung? Samsung is the only with VRT (ball bearings in the rim), so all other machines use some "other" type of system as well.

About the new Maytag FL with VRT - I'm sorry, I don't know the model number. I would think the stores that carry them (Best Buy, HHGregg, possibly HD and Lowe's?) could give you that info. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I HIGHLY recommend a trip to a small local appliance store that sells whatever you are thinking of... these people tend to KNOW much more about what they sell... then if you want to buy from a big box store... do that... but get your information from someone who knows what they are talking about... many times their service guys are right there too... so you tend to get much better information...

Another one who says this guy is not your best bet for accurate info -- I would not wash a good comforter on heavy duty!

I recently washed my parents' super king size down comforter in my LG FL -- I think it's a 4.2 cuft. They now hava a larger one, but I'm sure it will cost even more and break your budget. I think you could get the LG without steam. They are very quiet and smooth running. I would see no problem at all on a second floor.

I very rarely post but have been researching the same items for some time. This site is so wonderful and has been a great resource for me the past few years.

Just a little background: Im in my mid-thirties, single and a Realtor(15yrs). Since I was 17, I have renovated (by myself) old homes (often historic) that most other people would have given up on. I move every 2-4 years and purchase all new fixtures and appliances for every property as I restore it. I'm a stickler for quality over all else. Makes it easier for everyone. They have high quality, nearly new everything! and I get to buy my newest appliance fetish (even better).

Here is my take on the research I have done. Certainly, its just my opinion but I hope that there is something helpful that you can glean from it.

    * I STRONGLY AGREE with members (lascatx, plumbly22,et al.) who suggest going to a local small appliance store and asking questions. They are a wealth of knowledge and most have first hand experience of their product (esp. if the carry high-end products). One time I saw a lady come in w/ a whole chicken to "test drive" an advantium oven! Generally, small stores are extremely accommodating, they want you to be HAPPY- Their business relies on it.

*The capacity of Electrolux models (above) are the largest available. In other words, If it doesn't fit in ELUX,then it won't fit in any other W/D that is currently offered. Most companies offer machines of comp. capacity.

*Electrolux owns Whirlpool. The lower end of Electrolux kitchen appliances and made by Whirlpool and branded w/ both. The higher end kit.appls are not- (sim. to designers lending their name/designs to affordable retail stores- same name but not the same product from that designer at a boutique). Electrolux is price protected and won't do'scratch and dent' if an item is delivered and has blemish/flaw they send an entirely new item to replace it, not parts and pieces.

*I too was concerned about ELUX being new to W/D manufacturing. After research and visiting their site, I learned that they are not new to W/D. They have been making them for the european commercial and residential markets for 50 or so years. (I know that it doesn't ensure that new design will be without flaws- but that does make me feel better that they didn't decide last year to make w/d because it really sounded like a "good idea").

    * I have decided to purchase the IQ-touch and not wave touch. They will be stacked in my Laundry (dryer door reverses so they can open the same direction). After a year or so of contemplation, I don't think the steam feature is for me. I actually like the LESS expensive one better- that has never happened! :)

I originally had purchased an LG steamwasher(red) specifically for the STEAM feature from Box store. I suffered a severe hand injury while doing renovation work and couldn't have it delivered for some time.Only after very helpful reviews here- decided not to purchase and fought tooth and nail (for nearly a year to get my $$ back). Obviously, I don't want to be in that same boat again. Its the only time I haven't bought an
appliance from my local store (they didn't carry LG- and more recently have decided not to due to such mixed reviews and customer service issues).

    * Please don't think that I am saying that the Electrolux is the best, but I think that it is the clear choice for me and it should bode well from years to come. FYI, I have heard GREAT things from my appliance people about the SAMSUNG w/d and the balancing system, They also have very good things to say about the MIELE W/D. Mind you they do not sell either brand but keep up-to-date on their ENTIRE industry.

Sorry this is so long, I hope its helpful. Ive learning after purchasing nearly 7 entire kitchens and laundry sets in the past 18 years, that there will be some items I'll love and be thrilled with and others not so much. So the more hands on research, asking questions to the people who know first hand, and diligence will payoff when you're thrilled with your purchase. Wise choice coming here, ppl have such good ideas and are so sharing.

Best ofluck and let us know what you decide- :)

    September.

I also agree with going to the local stores to gain information, assuming you are open to buying from them. If you have decided from the get-go that you are going to buy from a box store or an online retailer, then leave the locals alone.

The problem with local small appliance stores here is that they tend to sell just one brand. There's a 'Trading Post' that only sells GE, for example. And I personally wouldn't want another GE w/d (or d/w or range, either).

So I wouldn't be confident of getting a truly unbiased opinion at a place like that.

I agree with whomever cautioned against washing a comforter on the Heavy Duty cycle; I'd never consider doing that.

My Maytag Bravos HE TL washer has a Bulky cycle, which is perfect for comforters, blankets, and sleeping bags.

I have a friend who washes her comforters in her kenmore elite HE 3T on heavy duty....and she says works like magic...
I am making a trip to our local appliance store today...hopefully i will get good info on what all i need
Is it true that sears will increase the offers near christmas
if so how about i buy in first week of december?

I think the problem here is 'heavy duty' on one machine is not necessarily the same as 'heavy duty' on another machine... for example on my bosch, using the 'heavy duty' option gies you a cold water fill with the heater bringing the water up to selected cycle temperature aka 'profile' wash...
