I'm not certain I understand your question. Did you want to keep the existing ceiling light, and also add lighting from the same electrical box? I've never heard of any way to do that, but maybe someone else has. However, if you just want to remove the existing ceiling light and put in a track light instead, that's definitely doable.

There are tons of different track lights available from many different companies, and you can mix different types of fixtures on the same track (so you could have a couple pendants for ambient lighting, plus spotlights you could direct at specific areas, just as an example). I don't know what style your kitchen is, but I think Pottery Barn has the most beautiful track lighting I've ever seen. On the other hand, there are other manufacturers who make tracks you can have in different shapes (other than a straight line), which may work better for the shape of your kitchen.

I think you're absolutely right in that I need a system other than a straight track.

I'll check what is available at Pottery barn.

I'll probbaly have to rely on Home Depot though. I live in a very small out of the way place.
