superchick: I had that oven, I do not recall it getting "that hot", however, I have had a lot of problems with the self-cleaning feature. The first problem was on thanksgiving morning waking up to the oven still in clean mode (YIKES) and no one to fix it...thank goodness the upper oven was workable. The computer glitches are very frequent.

We just purchased a Jenn-Aire double oven for the new house (rebuilding after a house fire), so hopefully I will not encounter any more GE computer problems.

GE replaced our "mother board" about 3 times in 10 years.

Superchick--we have Monogram ovens about 9 years old and have never had that problem. The cleaning cycle is also only 3 hours (although you can manually program it for more). I know this is not that helpful as mine are totally different ovens, but the computer/controls part of them has been absolutely trouble free. I hope to get new ones for my remodel (because of diff. issues) and I would love to hear from others about their experiences with this issue, both positive and negative.

I would not take "it's normal" for an answer. My control panel is never hot at all. I would make GE come out and look at the insulation and cooling fan, esp. right now when they are new and they might swap them out for you. This heating thing is not safe, and if it keeps happening your motherboard will be fried before too long like mjr's--maybe the heat was the source of all her computer glitches too. In my experience the right GE repairman will admit that a certain model has a particular glitch (happened with our fridge icemaker). If they see enough of them they will know how to fix them or if they're even fixable.

I've never had to run a cleaning cycle more than 2 hours. 5 hours! Maybe I won't get a GE after all.

I have posted in appliances, but didn't get any response from actual owners. My old Kenmore's cleaning cycle was about 4-5 hrs. also, so I was not alarmed that the cycle on the GE could go for 5 hrs. Although, I think when I set it, it automatically set a time (can't remember what it was) and I didn't adjust it. So in truth, I have no idea how long it was going to run.

Holly-so your control panel doesn't get hot, EVEN during cleaning? That's a shocker to me. The guy at GE (I felt) was kind of blowing me off. I tried to get him to tell me exactly how hot it was acceptable for the panel to be, but he wouldn't say. I absolutely can't believe that any electronics can withstand that kind of heat. I may call them and force them to come check it. Think that's a good idea? We kinda live in the boon-docks and they'd probably have to come from about 90 miles away.
I truly don't believe in this day and age that you can escape the problems of electronics. They are in everything we own and just like with a new car, I'm sure you're bound to get a lemon. I suppose I can deal with the hassle, but I just don't want my new house burned down in the process. If I'm going to need a new one, I want it now, not a year of troubles later!
clg7067, even with all that being said, I LOVE these ovens. I have the gas cooktop also. They cook like a dream. While they are not "top of the line" they were the best that I could afford and I'm extremely pleased with them. So please don't take my experience as a complete negative.

Sorry I am just now replying--I have never noticed any part of the front of the oven being hot in the whole time we've had them. I have never bothered to check the control panel during the clean cycle though...I do think I would have noticed it though if it got as hot as yours does!

It does sound to me like the guy blew you off and I would call back. YOu'll probably get someone different anyway (calling the 800 number). And you could also call wherever you got them, or a store locally that carries GE. I would insist though that they come out. It sounds really unsafe to me and like your electronics will fry and need to be replaced...I am totally not mechanical, but maybe it's the cooling fan? (which is different from the convection fan)

also you might try one more time over on Appliances--I think there was a lull around Christmas/New Year's an now you might get more response. they are very knowledgable over there.

oh--by the way--I called GE recently about a question about cleaning the oven (because I had misplaced the manual) and what the woman told me was dead wrong. She really sounded like she did not want to be bothered. So keep pushing and ask for a supervisor if you need to. And/or tell them you will send them the medical bill when you or your child or someone has to go to the ER with a thrid-degree burn! (that will get their attention!)

Ha! That's a great idea, holly! How about the bill when the darned thing burns my cabinet down?? :)

I do think I may call again, but I might try a shorter cleaning cycle on the lower oven, first. Just to see what happens. For what it's worth the oven has been working just fine, but who knows...

I ran self-cleaning for the first time this week so I could give you some feedback. Both edges of the control panel got very warm, but I could leave my hand on them with no problem. The middle area with the actual display
stayed cool. My granite got quite warm, so I hope they were right when they said putting the Monogram induction cooktop over the oven would be no problem.
I did need to relubricate 1 rack quite a bit to get it to slide smoothly again.

Thanks for the feedback, Beth. I called around to a distributor and she gave me the direct # to GE (not just Monogram). She insisted that my experience did not sound normal. I called GE and the lady I spoke with was very nice and also agreed that the oven should be looked at. I was also pleased to find out that GE will warranty the appliances one year from the date they are installed, not just from the purchase date.

I think the original guy I spoke with at Monogram was definitely blowing me off. Which really aggravates me! But the repairman is supposed to call in 24 hrs., so we'll see what happens. Better to be safe than sorry!

i have a ge monogram 30 dual fuel and I got an f9 error code. A technician came over and replaced the fan and the sail switch. Now it's all good

GE All Gas Monogram 36" range:

Pros: Great look, self cleaning

Cons:

1) Burners do not get very hot. The low is very low, but the High setting is Medium compared to most gas burners. It takes forever to get a pot of water to boil.

2) Paid GE for white glove set up, but apparently this did NOT include leveling as my pies and cakes are completely lopsided. It also did not include checking the oven temperature. Mine bakes about 25 degrees too cool. Now I know there is a leveling adjustment and thermostat adjustment, but what a pain! Have to purchase an oven thermometer to adjust the temperature accurately. Shouldn't this have been set up correctly in the first place?

3) Biggest problem of all is that you can only change the oven temperature in 25 degree increments. 350 or 375, but nothing in between. Even my old cheap Sears oven was adjustable in 1 degree increments.
