Usually, for the average laundry room, you can't beat a 4' fluorescent fixture that uses two T8 735 or 835 lamps. The odd colored lighting rumor is a left over from the previous least expensive lamp options using T12 lamp and ballast technology.

I dislike cool-color fluorescents and use type 830 (82CRI, 3000K CT) and 735 (76CRI, 3500K CT) T8 fluorescent lamps in my cellar.

However, I put a 2-lamp 48" fixture with type 850 T8 lamps (82CRI, 5000K CT) over the washer and dryer. The light from 850s is definitely better than the old alleged "daylight" and even the dreary "cool white" fluorescents. It may still be somewhat reminiscent of a cloudy day outside, but it makes sorting black and blue socks a whole lot easier.

I used an IKEA ceiling light for my laundry room called LOTROP. I am very satisfied with the lighting from it. I think it was $29.95 or something close.

You don't need a window in your laundry room. The flourescent fixtures described above are perfect.
