Supersize king bedding?

We have a tall, chunky king sized pine bed with an extra tall pillowtop mattress. The bed has wide wood side rails that make a bed skirt impractical. Between the mattress and the inch or two of box spring that peeks above the rails, I find it difficult to find bedding that is wide enough to cover down to the rails. I have tried bedspreads, but have difficulty cramming the extra length between the mattress and the footboard.

I haven't been able to find any supersized king bedding that I really like (I live in Canada - many companies do not ship here, or if they do, the cost is very high, so ordering online is a less than viable option). What I have considered is the possibility of buying a set that I do like, and then dismantling the bed skirt and adding it ot the sides of the comforter to give me the extra length. Do you think this would be doable?

An older picture of my bed, with long-gone bedding:

Thanks,

Carrie

    Beautiful bed!

I recently purchased a bed frame with rails all around (sides and foot). I loved it in the store, but when it came I realized I hadn't envisioned what to do about the box spring showing above the rails and below the duvet and that a bedskirt would hang lower than the rails. Not sure what you meant by a bedskirt being impractical. It takes a little effort, but you can use a bedskirt. Here's what I did: just tuck it between the bottom of the box spring and the bed frame. Note: you may need help holding up the box spring while tucking.

Mine gives the bed a tailored look, but yours will show less than mine so I don't think a "tailored" look will clash with your style.

I found a king Jaclyn Smith comforter, bedskirt and shams at KMart (on sale for about $70) that was extra wide and long and I found the largest duvet cover at Target ($50 or $60) this past spring. The comforter and duvet cover both come all the way down to the top of the box spring. You really do have to search. I had almost given up hope when I found mine.

Foe beds with rails where a bed skirt would only be seen a little, I would recommended a box spring cover. You can get them at Bed Bath Beyond or any place that sells bed linens. That would solve the problem of covering your box spring. An alternative to that is to cover the box spring in a fitted sheet.

I'm less concerned about the small amount of boxspring that shows than the amount of mattress - it is a 16" pillowtop. While I have had good luck with deep pocket sheets from Costco staying in place, I don't like the look of the 2 or 3 inches of sheet covered mattress not covered by the comforter.

Google "king size comforter 110" to find manufacturers who make comforters 110" wide. That's the minimum size you need to cover your extra deep mattress.

Had this same problem with a new, deeper king mattress. I bought one quilt from JCP and it drove me crazy. Then I ponied up for Pottery Barn. Fits perfectly and worth the price to feel calm in my bedroom. I wanted a quilt vs. comforter/duvet and PB had some more contemporary styles than other places and they fit! Good luck.

I use a down blanket that coordinates with the colors in our bedroom on our bed to cover our every day bed linens. Then I fold a comforter and place it at the end of the bed for color/texture. Since blankets are bigger then comforters this works really well for us.

You might want to look for a low profile box spring. That will solve the "exposed box spring look". They are about 5" thick as opposed to the standard 8 or 9".
Otherwise check out shopdownlite.com. I bought an oversized duvet cover from them. Very reasonable.
I have an oversized down comforter along with a featherbed topper on top of a pillow top mattress and it covers my king bed beautifully.

Dollfanz - shipping from Shopdownlite to Canada is estimated at an additional 25% of the cost of the order. That is what I mean about shipping to Canada not being really viable.
