I recommend fan / light combo's. I am addicted to fans, while my husband is a big "overhead light in the middle of the room" guy.
If you have 8' ceilings, take care where they are placed with relationship to the bed. If you have kids who jump, or while making the bed, light / fan could be damaged because the combo does take up a fair amount of space coming down from ceiling.

Please do not consider what you see "in the stores" to be anywhere near what the market bears. And fan quality of those could give you big headaches down the road.

We are in NoVA, and completed our construction late 2011. We dealt with Dominion Electric (I just looked, they have store near you (Laurel & Baltimore). I highly recommend. Our rep here was honest, and made recommendations based on our needs, and budget, also steered us away from companies who might be having issues just now, or parts / warranty issues in future.

We found that one of the big box stores carried same line of lighting. We ordered sample from one of the BB stores, so we could just see it, and return it. Later, when we ordered the actual piece to be installed in our home, we found that D.E. prices were actually lower than the big box. So don't think they are higher. Plus, if you are building, there might be 'builder's discount', but you should ask on that.
