Design Principles for Adding Another Sofa or Seating?

I'm beginning to frequent this site because I am moving and need to decorate a new space for the first time in a long time! My question of the moment is what kind of suggestions you might have for additional seating for my new living room. The photo below is from my old living room. My new place also has wonderful period details but the living room is larger than the old one which was very small. I would like to keep the rug and my wine colored loveseat and matching chair/ottoman. For additional seating I'd like to add a sofa. But I don't know what to look for to coordinate with the loveseat/chair. I'm assuming I should look for something with dark wood accents and rolled arms, to be in the same ballpark, but what color or other features?

For some variety, you might look for a skirted sofa rather than exposed wood legs (which will also eliminate the question of how to match the wood/leg styles). I would also look for a print or stripe rather than another solid. Maybe pick up the gold tones in the rug and look for a stripe that has the gold as well as the wine color from the existing pieces.

Be still my beating heart. That little sofa and chair are TO DIE FOR! And the house ain't bad either. ;)

Where did you get the existing stuff? It's going to be tough to find something that will hold a candle to what you have. That said, when I was sofa shopping last year, I zeroed in on Drexel Heritage's Somerset and Rupert pieces. They look very similar to yours, but they might be too similar, and as sueb20 said, you might be better off just getting something totally different. I wound up going with Vanguard's Eastlake from their Bungalow Collection, you might take a peak there too.

Good luck finding something! And if you decide that it's just impossible to match, and you want to get rid of everything and start all over, I will be glad to take those pieces off your hands. ;)

One other thing...be aware of size differences. Old furniture is small, new furniture is b-i-g. Measure things like overall depth and seat height and size of arms to make sure the new pieces you look at are in the same ballpark.

Thanks for your input. Bungalow, the furniture is by Statesville Chair, and I had it custom ordered in the wine plush corduroy from a local furniture store. I suppose I could order a couch through them, but as I recall they were enormously expensive and I'm not willing to ante up that much at this point in my life. I did do a quick search for Vanguard Eastlake/bungalow collection, but couldn't find anything. Is Vanguard the name of the furniture company? I'll also look into Drexel. Thanks for the tips! It may just be that I decide to sell these items and start all over again -- if so, I will let you know :)

I've recognize your dining room! In one of Jane Powell's books? Or Bungalow Nation? I can't remember. But your chair (I thought they might be new from the legs and the cushy cushions) was an inspiration for an old one I bought recently! Wow, small world.

Your house is beautiful! Thanks for posting the pics. Hopefully some of the more talented folks here have some ideas for your new place! :)

Yes, that's me! Several of my rooms appeared in Bungalow Nation. It was a fun project. And thanks for the vanguard link -- I'll look it up.

    What a fabulous house!!!

I would probably look for a similar/identical loveseat in a coordinating fabric.
