I have this one from Crate and Barrel and like it a lot. Roomy/sturdy enough for two spoons, modern but subtle at the same time.

I have a white one with two spoon rests, ceramic, very plain. It's simple and elegant...I think I got it at Ross or TJ Maxx for $3!!!

I use an empty envelope which came in that cooking day's mail. We get so muuch junk mail. Not pretty but easy, cheap, efficient. Is this recycling, repurposing? My mother would be proud that I thought of fancy words to just be cheap/efficient. Don't have to wash/dry a real spoon rest. Use the mail-toss it out. Oh, sure mom, lazy, too.

I bought one of these "whatchamacallits" years ago. It's cast iron with enamel and it's used on your gas burner as a simmer plate. It lives on our stove (unless we're using 5 burners at once and need to more it onto the counter) and I use it as our spoon rest. I hate traditional spoon rests because they aren't big enough for the "scoopeene" (our word for the ladle), spaghetti server, and other large serving/stirring gadgets. Oh and once in a while we use it as a simmer plate.

Until the new cat broke it, I used a square ceramic candle plate from Pier 1. It was approx 4 inches square and fit the bill. Edges came up just a bit. Not perfectly flat.

I bought a big one in stainless from TJMaxx. Holds ladles, multiple spoons without any trouble. It was cheap. Cheap is good.

I've got a stainless from TJMaxx--very simple and contemporary. Easy to clean. Have another one made by a local potter. I purchased a big utensil holder and she gave me a matching spoon rest that has ruffled edges. Works better than the big stainless one, but only for 1 spoon of almost any size.

I use a stainless spoon rest and lid holder. I like to stand my spoons (no idea why). I don't really use it to hold lids, though it does pretty well. I usually keep one spoon on the front and one on the back. Unfortunately, I can't remember where it came from.

Ebay has all kinds of quirky spoon rests. Do a search on ebay, using quotation marks around the phrase "spoon rest" in the search box. You'll get about 800 results! You mentioned glass and contemporary. Refine your ebay search further by using those words in the ebay search box.

I loved Rhome's idea, but have yet to implement: use a small cast iron pan that lives on the stove. Meanwhile I use a bread plate.
