I haven't looked closely at flex-track pendants, but I can make some guesses here -- you're used to that by now, I'd imagine.

I'm doubtful that there's much standardization in these products. If I'm right that each company uses proprietary hardware to hang these fixtures, then you might be able to buy some hardware from both companies and combine them. I did consider using such lighting for my dining area awhile back. In the brands I looked at, the glass shades were bought seperately and matched with a kit that contained the bulb socket, the wire for suspending the pendant and the chunk of hardware that mechanically and electrically attatches the wire to the track. I'm thinking you might be able to buy the wire/hardware kits for both brands and do some mixing and matching. That could get expensive, though, so first I'd look into changing out the transformer (the electronic component itself, not the canopy that contains it) and just using all the other hardware that's designed for the pendants you prefer. You could even just get rid of the 300w transformer that the track manufacturer integrates into in the canopy (ebay?) and use a remote 150w transformer instead. One way or another, it's definitely possible.

Yup. Otherwise, you could theoretically add more pendants after the fact. I guess its the same theory as the compact fluorescents having to be a particular "built in " type; if you could just change out the bulb, you would, but changing out entire fixtures (and transformers) they assume most people won't do because of the expense.

We were even thinking about buying the whole system from one company, and then just adding substituting two pendant heads -- that would mean the only additional cost would be the heads, and they aren't too too expensive (the system is the expensive part).

Oh well....I think we've decided to do two low-voltage monopoints instead of jerry-rigging the track system. The track system would be more expensive anyway, although we'll need to do a little electrical work in the ceiling to do the monopoints (set up originally for a track system).
