We're doing it but don't have a photo because it's not gonna fit until we get a redress of grievances. You're on the right track though. We've put a pull-out cutting board above it so we can swoosh the detrius of tomatoes and onions right into it. Garbage unit is below that, so we can swoosh meat cuttings into the trash.

This is something I was thinking about too, here's a post that discusses options, I found it interesting. HTH

Here is a link that might be useful: compost ideas

key words for web search are "steam pan" and then a size expressed in a fraction like 1/3 or 1/6 or 1/2. I use them for everything.

Bring your drawer to a restaurant supply house. They have all the sizes there.

I'm copying celticmoon's compost drawer. The cabs aren't finished yet, but I bought a 1/3 size steam pan so we could see if the size was right for us. It measures 12 3/4" x 7" x 2.5" D. Not all 1/3 pans have exactly the same L x W dimensions. Depths can be 2.5", 4" or 6".

Y'all got me thinking about how my Mom would have felt if Dad had kept the compost in the kitchen, considering that it was made up primarily of fresh cow manure.

The thread referenced above has some great compost-containing ideas; thanks for it. I've decided to try including an open shelf below the counter where I'll do food prep so I can easily set a plastic food service bucket (quart size) which has a lid that I can take out when large amounts of scraps are being generated and can be available for placement right near the action or positioned for swooping as required.

I find the compost bucket is never where I want it to be, so I'm hoping keeping it small and mobile enough will permit me to move it to taste. We'll see....

I'm afraid those food service large metal trays would be hard to lift in and out and heavy. I think smaller may be easier to control, with a few "in play" as mentioned above. Cheap, replaceable, mobile.

Thank you everyone! I'm sending a photo from the thread you linked to, Pondlily, to my contractor.
