Rug options: Your thoughts?

Rug options: Your thoughts?

Short version of lo-o-o-o-n-g story.

Slowly redoing MB, on budget.

Prefer modern/transitional art/design, but sentimentally attached to parentÂs oil paintings.

Room is 15 feet square. Great light. Paint is EKÂs lichen. House built in 1940,

Room will be simple because we (a) like it that way and

(b) must minimize fibers in the room and wash all bedding in HOT water.

HereÂs the room without a rug.

The chair is visible from the upstairs hall way,

so it is kind of a focal point of the room.

Room with current "leafy" rug

Room with a recent rug purchase from Overstock.

I am disappointed because the rug doesnÂt look AT ALL like its pic in Overstock.

Because the rug is a very good, hand-knotted rug,

some of you suggested we think about it more

before sending it back. What do you think?

In some pics, I threw a blanket over the chair to replicate the idea of slipping the chair in an off-white fabric.

Thoughts? Remember, I am a modern/transitional kind of gal.

deltabreeze, I still really like the leafy rug. It's works well with the paintings, your plant and the colors of the room.

opps, this was supposed to be the last pic.

I, too, really like the leafy rug. At times, though, it feels a bit busy. I might be able to "tame" it by making a stronger link between the rug colors and the colors on the chair pillow. I also wished the leafy rug were just a tiny bit larger.

I learned not to buy largish rugs online because most of the time the colors are never as they appear on my monitor. Frustrating!

If you're truly not happy with either of them, I'd go to a store and pick one out, even if you have to pay more.

To me, the second rug looks so much better. It looks more simple and serene. The color of the chair also looks very well with it, at least on my monitor. As, deltabreeze, stated in another context, a different throw pillow on the chair may be something to consider.

"Remember, I am a modern/transitional kind of gal."

Then you will never be happy with rug #2.
#1 looks lovely- very serene or go with seagrass/sisal, which I think I suggested before or I meant to...

I'm sorry but the new one isn't doing anything for the room that I see. Did you ever happen to see the more contemp ones I posted at the end of your last thread? Just wondered what you had thought of them.

    Not much I guess...lol.

I think your room is beautiful...and I like all the components. The picture is beautiful but dark to my eye and I think there needs to be something as dark on the floor to help spread the dark around...Or maybe hang the picture over the bed and put the mirror over the chair?

I didn't post on your 'other' rug thread, but I feel sorry for everyone who did. Don't understand why you left them hanging. Maybe you just forgot?

Here is a link that might be useful: rug from Overstock

    leafy rug! leafy rug!!!

I really, really like the rug from Overstock, and I think it is perfect with your chair (uncovered), your painting, and the rest of the room.

However, if you prefer contemporary or transitional, you will probably never be happy with it. I am not a fan of the leafy rug, particularly with your paintings. After all the rug options you have looked at, maybe it's time to look at a solid rug? Maybe sisal/seagrass, or even a bound carpet? I have seen some really pretty carpet lately.

Leafy rug. No slipcover on chair. Chair looks beautiful against the wall color.

Natal -- I didn't mean to offend anyone! In my last thread, almost everyone suggested that I KEEP this rug. After thinking it over (and thank you to all who did), I thought the best way to respond would be to post this new thread that had pics of all three options (1) no rug, (2) leafy rug and (3) keeping the new rug (as suggested).

Jant -- I liked the designs of the rugs you posted, but thought I wanted a light color. I think that is what is throwing me about this new rug, too.

So you all are divided, too huh?

Responses to a few other comments. First, yes, buying a big rug on line is very risky. The oil painting won't fit over the bed, so this is really the only place for it. I like sisal or sea grass, but this room doesn't have any pattern in it, so I was hoping for some pattern in the rug.

Anyone like the idea of a slipcover on the chair?

Well phooey, I did it again. I wrote a response, come back to check how things are going and it's not there. I'm sure I was messing with two things and once and didn't send it after the preview. I hate when I do that.

I vote, as before, for the leaves. They go with the feel of the art, your plant and I just happen to love leaves. Beside you have that beautiful tree outside your room to pick up the leaf pattern too.

I'm liking the chair as it is, though it would look just a pretty with a slipcover since your bedding is white. I'm just a color person visually warms the room and makes the chair seem more welcoming to me.

I'd keep chair as is, but return the 'new' rug. The leafy rug looked 'clean' or 'fresh', whereas the new one seems 'muddy'.

Duhhh....I love the new O rug but didn't realize it was for this room~
    sorry...
I love it but it's traditional and not the look you wanted for this room~
could it work elsewhere and you use the leafy rug in here?

Loribee, yes it is for this room . . .
Jant, yes I have done that more times that I would like to admit! Sometimes I can find what I typed by using the back cursor arrow and then hitting SUBMIT!

All, I think I may be returning full circle to the leafy rug, my $108 wonder.

To answer people's questions about Overstock's return policy , I don't know how they will resolve this -- espcially given that the rug doesn't appear "defective" in many people's eyes. It just isn't the rug that was in the overstock pic or the rug of my dreams. Instead the rug is a much darker, muddled, tea washed item.

For me it depends. If you are keeping the bedding white, I would stay with the orginal rug because there is so much white in the bed you need some white in the rug IMO. If you are intending to change your bedding to add some color, I would go with the second rug, which I prefer when looking at rug to rug only without the accessories in your room. The second rug to me is warmer and looks more rich, it goes well with your picture and the green in your chair

roseabby, yes the bedding will stay white (or ivory) and won't be anything fabulous. Because of allergies, I have to wash all bedding in very hot water weekly.

dust mite allergies? DH just got tested last week and he is allergic to dust mites. Fortunately is is not too bad, just had to get some pillow and mattress covers to help eliminate some of the dust mites and I vacuum the hardwood floors in the MBR everyday.

Leafy rug, no rug, or sisal. The O rug doesn't do anything for me or the room (IMHO). I am pretty sure I said that in the last thread. Also, I like the chair as is.

OK . . .this has been a hard haul. I don't have a lot of confidence/experience picking rugs. Funny, I picked the paint color on the first try and my lamps during my first vist to the lamp store. But picking a rug has been torture. I appreciate everyone's induldence (she says sheepily)

I like the chair very much as is -- would definitely not slipcover it white. (Great lines.) I think the white pillow is a missed opportunity though. Since the chair is so visible, that pillow could be a real litle punch of color -- maybe a medium blue to pick up the sky in the painting? Or a rusty color like the painting's foliage?

I really like your Overstock rug -- but not there. It's much more traditional in feel, and since you say you prefer modern... The Leafy rug is more modern, but I don't think it works terriby well with the picture.

Frankly, I like the bare floor -- a lot. It's a clean, modern look that would probably be great for allergies.

I like the new rug, but not in the room. I still like the leafy one and I would not cover the chair. It looks great in the color as is. Sorry it's been so hard finding the right rug. Why don't you wait till you find the right one? My daughter had been looking for an area rug last year and then she figured she would wait. A few weeks ago, I happened upon the perfect rug at HOme Goods for a great price. You will find the perfect one in time. The room looks beautiful as is anyway. At least you picked the right color on your first try. I wish I had that luck!

    I don't have a lot of confidence/experience picking rugs.

This is why it's so important to see the rug in person before you buy it. Normally I'd like the O rug in your room but like you said, the colors are "muddy." I can easily vision a vibrant colored rug in there with deep red in it, which will keep the room on the cozy side, IMO.

When we went shopping for our largest rug, we both saw it at the same time and said in unison, "That's the one!" It will just pop out at you once you see a rug you like.

Keep second rug, and send first to me :)

I really do love the first one in your space. Beautiful room!

The first rug, centered on the bed not on the wall space, with the legs of the bed on the rug OR the rug moved closer to the window so that there is some breathing space between the edge of the rug and the bed. Otherwise, it looks like the bed slipped off the edge.

I would also try to pull the chair out from the corner just a couple of inches. In fact, I would be inclined to put it flat against the wall with the pix, rather than crowded into the corner. I don't think the pretty lines of the chair are appreciated as much when it is wedged in the corner.

The second rug is okay, but just what you would expect to see these days. The first is more interesting, simpler in line, and fresher in feeling. Simple elegance, like your space.

Roseabbey  yup, dust mite allergies  pretty severe for me (even though I get shots). The best solution for me is to minimize fibers and wash everything that comes into regular contact with skin in hot water.
Cyn, I am getting persuaded! I like the leafy rug, but am not used to buying rugs. When a few people said they thought it looked busy, I get flummoxed.
Sweeby, I donÂt think the green chair needs a slipcover IF I stay with the light youÂre your comments about the white pillow are interesting. I can play with it. Maybe a deep taupe color with rust flange? Perhaps it would make the leafy rug work better with the room. Thanks.

Scanmike. You have been the most loyal fan of the leafy rug. I should have listened to you before ordering from Overstock. I think my strategy now is to live the leafy one and see if, over time, I ever find the perfect one  just like you did at Home Goods.
OakleyokÂyou are totally right and I am almost willing to swear off buying another rug over the internet again.
    Momto4boys  thanks!
Les, I think you are right once again. I read somewhere that rugs are supposed to be pushed right up against beds and blindly followed this suggestion  even though it doesnÂt anchor the chair well. I would give your suggestions about the rug and chair a try right now except DH is sleeping already. Oh well, in the morning.

I'd go with no rug, especially with your dust mite allergies. I like best your first picture, with no rug--that's the most modern looking. I wouldn't slipcover the chair, it's beautiful as is.

All that being said, I'm fond of modern/transitional design as well and I *do* think traditional rugs can work, but the geometric designs and bolder colors are probably better than subdued floral. We've got Persian tribal rugs in our living room and they really warm up the space without making it look too traditional, at least in my eyes. Look at all the votes, on this and the previous thread, showing preference for the rug as is instead of the more vivid colors you thought you were getting: I think the tea-stained look is more traditional, and the more vivid colors you thought you were getting go better with contemporary design. In other words, I think your instincts were correct.

If you need a rug from Overstock, this is the one I would get (Hand-woven Regency New Zealand Wool Rug). It echoes the beautiful blues and greens already there. The borderless design is a more modern interpretation of a traditional rug. Leave your chair as is, it's too beautiful to slipcover! Don't add a white/ivory pillow to it either, the contrast is too much...use a more subdued one.

I like the leafy rug and the green chair as-is. Particularly since the picture is very traditional I like the mix with the contemporary rug. This rug from Karen also looks nice but its hard to say when you get it in person. I agree with her that its more modern interpretation.

karen je -- that rug is tempting but I just swore to Oakleyok that I would not buy another rug over the internet again!

All-- my strategy now is to live the leafy rug and play with pillows and bedding to better ground it in the room. (Any ideas would be welcome!)

Over time, I might find the perfect rug, but I will need to see in person before ordering it.
    Thank you everyone.

I also like Karen's rug, but after seeing your rug and the one I bought (not from Overstock but from manuf) they look so different in person. It's hard to tell colors, esp. from Overstock's website.
If you want some white on the chair, use a pillow. Don't cover that chair!!

Delta: I know you made your decision, but wanted to give you my vote anyway which is either no rug or the FLOR botanical rug you were considering early on. I think it would work best with your dust mite allergy also. I like the cream one best for your space, though as you can order 3 samples for $5, I'd try the Moss and Taupe as well.

Here is a link that might be useful: FLOR botanical

Ha -- it would be funny it I ended up with FLOR once again! Yes, I like the FLOR florals -- particularly with solid borders. I'll see if I can check them out from one of my local stores or splurge the $5. Thanks. How's painting going?

You know what they say about can't get enough of a good thing? Sorry the hand-knotted rug did not work for you, but I think you made a good choice to send it back since it doesn't really jibe with your vision for your bedroom. It's frustrating as I can totally see that rug in my family room-the actual rug and not the one of the picture on the website. I would've gladly paid another $300 for that rug over the one I have (which is still shedding). Painting is going well. I'm done with the walls and the dresser and hope to post some progress pics tomorrow once I get the curtain rod up.

ok val, you picqued my curiousity and I ordered samples of the botanicals and this floral with a border.

I agree the tufted frond may also be a good possibility.

I'll be interested to see how it looks in your space.

Just wanted to add my vote for rug #1 (the leaf one). Your room is lovely!

I like the leafy rug if you are going for a more modern look. But I wonder if you should switch your paintings around so that the smaller one from the other side of your bed goes over by the chair instead. The current large painting looks a little big to me (by the chair) for the modern vibe you're going for.

And I know this sounds nuts, but could you then paint a white/cream color rectangle on the wall by the chair to "frame out" the smaller painting? Maybe this would up the modern element?

Love your lamps by the way.

    kwb--thanks
bananafana-- you are right that the big pic is a little big, but -- if the pic is to be in the room -- this is the best spot for it. The painting doesn't fit over the bed and its art looks better viewed from a distance. So over the chair it goes. I hope to balance it out more by growing the tree (to the right of the painting). As far as the lamps go, I am so happy. They are the perfect reading lamps: easy to adjust, dim, move. They were a big splurge for us (almost $1000 for the three of them!), but I have not regretted it at all.
