I was in your shoes last summer with lovely faux oak cabinets. We bit the bullet and painted. I love my kitchen for the first time. We used a paint that is made to cover plastic and painted them white. We also bought countertop paint and painted the awful country pink countertops black. We have less than $200 in the kitchen,including putting in a backsplash and it looks like a different kitchen!

There is a product called Cabinet Rescue, made specifically for this, I have not used it yet, but I want to, sick of my fake wood cabinets.
