metal lathe advice

I am hoping to be able to machine a few small aluminum or brass parts using a metal lathe. I don't have the money to buy a full sized lathe, but I'm seeing ads for "mini/micro" lathes that run a few hundred dollars. Any advice as to whether or not such units would be suitable? The parts I would be making are at most 2-3" in diameter.

Go to mini-lathe.com They have a ton of info on mini lathes. Beware, the cost of tooling is a very high percentage of the machine costs - that is you can buy a mini lathe for $500, but can easily put in several hundred more to get quick change posts, keyless chuck, knurler, measurement devices, brass and steel rods for machining, and other items.
