MarolynK: If you are near enough to a lighting store, a trip there could be very helpful. (Call to set up an appointment.) Someone with a background in lighting should have some good ideas. I'm no expert but I have heard that to get the best lighting effect you need to take into consideration and plan for different types of lighting -- ambient, task, accent. If you bring a layout and pictures to a lighting store they should probably be able to offer some advice.

Also if you post a layout and some pictures, then the talented designers here would be better able to help. Be sure to note orientation of your window (south gets more light than north, etc.) and if the kitchen is open to other rooms indicate if it gets any borrowed light.

The article by "Amy" is nothing but blather written by someone who used a translator. The grammar is abysmal. Nothing on there reads like someone would write for whom English is their first language. "It would also let be good for your house ventilation" was not just a random typo - those funny types of sentences are all over that website.

Marolyn - how set are you on having a ceiling fan? There are some beautiful chandeliers out there that can cast better light. I personally don't like a ceiling fan in the kitchen. Yes, it can start to get hot in there, but a ceiling fan will cool what you just heated.
