Tumbled marble backsplash in kitchen a bad idea?

I saw a "tumbled marble" I like for my backsplash in the kitchen. I was told it is not a good idea to use this in the kitchen even with a sealer. So I decided to research it on google. Here is what I found out. It says the sealer seals out water and oil based but not acids like lemon and tomatoe sauce. It will stain with acids. So now I am having second thoughts. I plan to use tile all the way around including above my "slide in stove". I know I can put something like metal above the stove but want tile.

I would love to hear from those that have had tumbled marble (for quite some time) for the kitchen backsplash (inc above stove). Have you had any issues with it? Are you sorry you did this?

i had a tumbled marble mosaic in my old kitchen and it wasn't a problem. i usually wiped down any splatter from the range after eating, but even if i didn't get to it right away there wasn't any staining. i don't think you'll have a problem unless you throw a can of tomato sauce at the back splash and douse it with lemon! so while acids can certainly stain the back splash i never gave it a thought. GL! p.s.: i'm using honed marble subway tile in the new kitchen, so i'm using it again.

Over the last 4 years I've used tumbled marble more than any other material for the backsplashes I've done. I'd say it's not a problem. :-)

I have concerns like spaghetti sauce splashing on it as it boils. I did have sauce on the old tile but it was ceramic and it wiped right off. I use lots of tomato products.

I had the same concerns when I did my kitchen, but was reassured that once it is sealed it is not a problem. I do not like the look of a different material above the slide-in range and since my granite is very dark, I didn't want it as a full backsplash.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my tumbled marble backsplash. I sealed it with one coat of 511 impregnator and Vioila, nothing penetrates. Here is my picture, which I am sure everyone here is sick of seeing already! Susan

That looks alot like what I picked out. Mine is from Westminster Tile in the brown tan color. What is yours? It sure is beautiful. Your whole kitchen is beautiful. I have not seen it yet.

did you use4 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 tiles? I want to use diagonal like you did but was told it works best with 6 x 6 so was wondering what your was.

Thanks. My tumbled marble is 4x4 and its called dark Andino. I'll bet it looks great in 6x6. I really wanted to break up the dark cabinets from the dark countertop.

Don't worry about the staining. Tumbled marble has been used for years and years in building.
    Good Luck!

What brand did you use? Is yours marble or travertine?

Susan 4664 we never get tired of seeing a beautiful kitchen!

May I ask what color you painted yours? I Love it!

Susan: Many of us ARE sick of seeing your kitchen...not because it isn't beautiful, but because we are envious :)

My current backsplash looks exactly like Susan4664s. I have been really happy with it. I have had it for 5 1/2 years and have never had one problem with it. I sealed it right after it was installed and have not done anything since

That is very encouraging! Since yours is like Susans can you tell me where you got yours? Also what Brand? It looks close to what I am looking at but would like to know what yours is and compare in color and price. Thanks!

I believe it's Alku who has a lovely white marble 'splash. It's quite worth doing!
