New Year Project - Waterlox-Bubinga-Media-Rack

Here is a project I just finished. I have an extensive home theater with many electronic components. This is the new rack for the amps, processor, dvd, blu ray etc...

The wood is 15/16" solid bubinga (yes, they make guitars from it).

No stain, this is the natural color of the wood that is enhanced by waterlox.

The design aesthetic was - Simple and Practical.

There is one fixed shelf. May add another if need arise.

The rack is on casters so that I can reach the back easily.

Will post photos of the loaded rack tomorrow...

OH my gosh! I am so drooling here. I love Bubinga! It's just so darn beautiful and so is you piece of furniture! We have a woodworkers shop that carries many of the exotic woods and I just love touching and looking at all the wood grains. This is just stunning! Thank you for sharing it.

Very nice!

Since I know nothing about bubinga, and you say that you didn't stain it, how did you get that stripe in there?

The "stripe" is the sapwood. He glued two pieces of wood together at the sapwood edge. If he'd glued it the other way, there would have been a stripe at the outside edges instead of the middle.
That looks brilliant.

casey is, of course, correct. I have book matched planks of bubinga. The sap wood has been brought to the inside of the glued joint to create an interesting pattern. I also shellaced the sap wood first to keep it from darkening from the waterlox.

That bubinga really puts zing in the simple design of the media stand. Made a utilitarian stand lool extraordinary!

How did I miss this thread? Pharaoh it looks terrific! Is the bubinga "leftover" from your bathroom project? As you know, we had our (walnut) DR table, buffet, shelf, made in a studio/shop in Brooklyn. They had a HUGE (really huge!) bubinga table in the shop for repair during one of our early visits. That is some really neat wood!

I will have to show DH (who plays guitar, BTW) this thread. I'm not sure which will interest him more--your gorgeous wood/audio rack, or your components! :-)

cat_mom, yes indeed. I think I bought an entire bubinga tree (in slabs)! It may not be called 'eco-conscious' to use tropical hardwoods but my definition of eco is different. I build things of out quality stuff and dont plan on replacing it during my lifetime. So a piece of furniture will last me decades, vs something that is replaced every 10 years as tastes change, trends change. Reduce, reuse, recycle (in that order).

Anyway, I love your walnut pieces. I am sure they will last your lifetime too!

To impress your DH, the hometheater has more components. There are two more amps that are close to the main speakers. I have a 5.1 surround sound with a high def projector on a 150" screen. The black tube on the right is a 12" hsu research subwoofer.
