onyx kitchen backsplash

Both a gentleman considered a stone guru and a friend whose license plates read "ROCKDOC" have advised me not to install onyx as a backsplash in my kitchen. The concern is not only the heat generated by a 6 burner Wolf range but the effect of moisture, splatters and staining. While I just read the brilliant suggestion to tape foil behind the range when doing any potentially disastrous dish, I do worry about other possible problems - even with careful sealing of the stone.

My kitchen planner has advised me to install either a 5 or 10 inch stainless steel backsplash and then use the onyx above it. A stainless steel backsplash would not be a thing of beauty in this application; I would prefer avoiding this.

I have seen many photos of new kitchens with all sorts of tiling material behind commercial style ranges, which leads me to question the necessity of the steel backing. The honey onyx I am considering is not the minibrick shown on this site but one done in varied sizes. While I believe the onyx would be lovely with the cabinetry and granite I have chosen, I do have these concerns.

Can anyone relieve my anxiety? Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Toby
