final layout?? I'd appreciate your input!

I have come up with what I believe to be my final layout. I've listed my concerns/questions below the layout. It is not exactly to scale, but I've shown correct dimensions.

{{!gwi}}

Some background:

My current kitchen has the same footprint. Looking at the new layout my Cooktop is currently in the island with a downdraft, wall ovens are where I've put the fridge, fridge is currently to the left of the range.

Things I wanted in the remodel:

1. cooktop out of island ( too small; things land on top)

2. keep an indoor grill

3. better ventilation

4. gas burners

5. granite counters

6. GE Monogram range (recent addition!)

7. use existing cabinets - this will allow me to purchase better equipment & do other projects elsewhere in the house

Concerns:

1. Will I like going from wall ovens to a range?

2. Is the fridge too far from the sink?

3. Will I mind facing a wall to cook?

4. The range takes up my baking prep area.

I have considered the following alternatives, but each still presents a challenge:

1. moving the cooktop to the penninsula - still stuck with a downdraft, wall oven far away

2. Keep current layout & get single door fridge that opens up to counter rather than cooktop - still have downdraft & possibility of still wanting to prep on island cooktop

3. total redo to L-shape with large island - love this idea, but this would still place two appliances over 11 feet apart. Aesthetically it would look good, but DH loves our pennisula. So, it would look nice, cost alot more & not give any more functionality that the layout pictured.

I would really appreciate any input you can give on the current layout while addressing my concerns. Thanks so much!

Kay

Corner cabinets are usually 36", not 30". I wonder if you can even access a 36" one beside a range that sticks out.

The corner is a lazy susan, so access is not a problem. I do wonder if I should split that 30" cab to the left of the range so the range would be centered better. it would also give me more room for baking prep.

I think I wasn't clear. In a 30" corner cabinet, the max thing that can fit is normally a bit over 8" wide if frameless, - but it will be less because of the range, something like 6-6 1/2". In a 36" corner cabinet, the max size item is around 16 1/2", but because of the range, it will be more like 12-13".

You'll have to add the depth of the range bump out and oven handles to consider on how you kinda have to weave in there beside the range and potentially hot ovens to move stuff into or out of the corner cabinet. And also consider the added reach you'll need because you can't be right in front of the corner cabinet door - not enough room for a body to fit there.

The same reason is why you won't be able to prep in that corner (altho you can store some prepped stuff there) and why you won't be able to reach the back of the upper cabinets in that corner.

Kayl, your layout is similar to mine (I don't have a peninsula tho), and I've chosen to center my cooktop on that short wall.

If you're keeping the existing cabinets, how are you managing to squeeze a hood in the uppers? And is it really an option to revise the 30" cabinet on the end to center your range? Can you get new cabinets to match the existing?

would it be possible to put a small prep sink in your island, to make the main sink for clean-up and the island for prep?

bmorepanic, I hadn't thought of that! Thanks! Do you have a solution to my problem? I have agonized over this remodel for so long (hence my muliple posts for help!). I just want my new appliances (old ones are dying!), but it would be a very expensive mistake if I don't get it right.

    HELP!!!!!!!!

karen belle, the 30" cabinet to the left of the range is currently in the range location - base & upper. When they move I'll have 36" of open space in the upper area. Do you have a layout you could post? I'm curious where your oven & fridge are.

As to the island sink, I had thought of that, but the island is small 36" x 50" and so close to the big sink that I hadn't thought of it. I was hoping for butcher block on the island too.

Kayl, here is our layout (ignore the 78" note).

We used to have a peninsula and ditched it. Our kitchen is long and kind of narrow (13'x23).

Thanks for posting that, Karen Belle. I assume your peninsula was in the same location as mine? Do you mind the distance from cooktop to fridge or that the ovens & fridge are across an aisle. That is one thing I worry about with the fridge.

Btw, how do you all these pro layouts? Did you all have a KD or there is a simple program out there that I'm missing?

Without being there, I'm kinda hesitant about offering anything.

I see a 12" and an 18"cabinet in the peninsula. Put the 18" on the end of the range and the 12" beside the corner cab and move the the 30" in the peninsula?
