My CL Find.

So this has been a couple of weeks in the making and I didn't want to say anything until I had it home safe and sound (so to speak). Hubby has discovered the joys of CL - especially the "free" page. This set came up and Hubby contacted the lady as he knows I seriously dislike our existing set. We didn't know much from the pictures and it wasn't quite exactly what we expected but it's cute and it's much more my style.

Story is that this was her parent's set. They got it in the 50's. It was obvious that the lady really cared about the set as she kept fussing over it. She had wanted to refinish it herself (even to the point that she somehow found more of the original fabric) but had to give up for personal reasons. We have promised to send her pics when we have it's redone.

Most (if not all) of the pieces still have the original labels. They're from American Chair Company in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Certainly not a high-end set but it's sturdy. Obviously it needs refinishing but we knew that. The fabric on the seats is original. I'm kind of torn on whether or not I want to try and save it.

So anyhow, here it is...

Chair:

Two of these, 4 without arms.

Detailed pics if you click through.

At barest minimum, this will make a good "practice" set for us to test our furniture refinishing skills. The tops, according to the product catalogs Hubby found online are maple plywood. The other pieces look like solid wood. I just love the handles.

Oh wow did you make a killing. That set is beautiful. I just love that buffet. Those chairs are so wide and comfy looking. Congratulations, it's fabulous.

How fun! This is a fabulous find and you can't beat the price. You're going to have fun fixing this all up. Please be sure to post before and after pics for us to see.

Lucky you! It's a pretty set and the price was right.

I think I have the matching corner hutch in our condo! I love the handles also. Since the condo renovation, I don't have a good place for it but I don't want to give it up. It's other "flaw" is that it's not very tall (taller than me at 5'4" but not tall enough for some the wall spaces I'd like to fill).

I'll be anxious to see & read about your refinishing project. In the meantime I'll keep analyzing all the corners in the condo to see where I can re-purpose my hutch.

It may not be high end, but it has interesting lines and a really pleasing (at least to my eye) style. Love the shape of the chairs. Good score. Make sure you post more progress pix.

Great find. I love vintage furniture and think it looks better than high end furniture built today. Don't forget old furniture was built to last not like the stuff made today.
The lines of your furniture are classic and timeless. I am betting that after you refinish it becomes your forever dining set! Have fun with it. ( and I can barely type because I spent the better part of yesterday stripping a hutch!)

Thanks everyone. We're really excited about it OK, me more than Hubby I suspect). I love the fact that it comes with a history and lots of love behind it.

brutuses: I just took another look at the chair pic and realized the angle makes things seem a bit larger than they are. The set is smaller in scale than you'd think. This works really well for our smaller scale suburban home. Our only concern is that we don't think our taller/bigger relatives will fit. Oh well, we have other chairs for them.

I love dropleaf tables. This is going to be gorgeous. I'll take vintage furniture to new furniture any day.

    Fabulous find!!!!

Personally I would recover the seats. That way everything would be "new" and fresh.

I agree with betty, recover the seats. Probably not a hard job. I'd do something funky - maybe a wider stripe.

If I do change the fabric, I'll probably go with a toile or a paisley or a floral of some sort. I figure there's not too much fabric there so I can "sneak" it in (Hubby doesn't like "fussy" too much).

It's a great set and I'm very, very happy to have it. (Mom is too as she's going to get the old set for their kitchen.) Refinishing it should be fun. Hubby suspects it's a lacquer finish which means we should be able to clean and refinish rather than strip, which would be awesome on so many levels.

Heck, "antique" is 100+ years, right? That means we're more than half-way there with this set.

More CL finds today, my fave being a set of 3 lamps. They're white ceramic/glass and have little pink flowers painted on them. Probably from the 60's or 70's. They need some cleaning up and at least one needs a new cord. They will need shades, too so expect a thread on that in the near(ish) future.

Here's a link of a post I made to the Decorative Painting board's gallery that you might enjoy. Remember you can paint, stencil, decoupage, etc. It can be a lot more fun to do something unexpected. Maybe this will get your creative juices flowing?

What a fun set to get started with. I've dabbled a bit with restoring and refinishing. That would be great if it is lacquer and you can remove it with denautured alcohol as in my (limited) experience, stripping can be a LOT of work. I'd love to see you try your hand at painting the buffet. Something in a glazed/rub thru finish would look stunning. You can also try and see if you can clean and touch it up using Restore-A-Finish. The results may surprise you.

We're not really that into painting good wood furniture. In fact, we went through the terribly laborious process of cleaning, stripping, sanding and refinishing our kitchen cabs so that we could preserve the wood. I've thought about the Restor A Finish but am not sure it will be enough for this set. OTOH, we acquired another item that looks to be a perfect candidate for RaF.

Teriffic score. Can't wait until you bring it back to it's original glory.

it is absolutely gorgeous, you will have a good time learning to refinish with them, take your time, it will be a family heirloom in your family for a long time.

We don't have any kids but I do have at least one niece that I think would appreciate this. Or maybe it will be a grand-niece (or nephew) some day. We'll see.

I do plan to take lots of pics and keep everyone updated once we start. That may be a while, though as we have family matters to attend to, first. Not to mention a kitchen that still needs to be finished.

What is CL? I thought I asked this on another post but I don't remember what post it was.

I lived in Sheboygan, WI right out of college. The chair company sound familiar.

OK, I just figured it out. I've never checked them out. As soon as I get some free time, I'll check the.m out
