latest kitchen plan

As we had to add four and half feet to width of kitchen, the dimensions are now, 17.5Â x 14.10Â. The cooktop is on one wall and the refrigerator is on the opposite wall and would now be far away. Thought of relocating the French door fridge next to the wall oven but am afraid the door would hit the handle of the oven and would be a pain to always wait for the oven to close to open fridge.

Any recommendations as to the design would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have certain reasons for wanting the second island in the middle? In its current location it is a barrier island - hence, a barrier between your sink and oven. You have a wonderful space to work with, but spreading the appliances out on all four walls will mean allot of travel while preparing your meals.

I'm no expert (hence my post for layout help too), but here's what I would do: lose the barrier island and pull back your main island/sink into the kitchen more. If you really want the cooktop & oven separate perhaps the oven bank could be on the end next to the cooktop. That would leave the current oven space for the fridge. The current fridge location could be anything: bake center, desk etc.

The one thing I love about my current kitchen (before remodel) is the tightness of my work triangle. I'm not sure I would/will like a larger triangle as I am the primary cook. As I'm seen recommended here so often - picture yourself actually making a meal with your layout in mind, go through the steps of a favorite dish from start to finish, then you'll have a better idea of the functionality. Good luck!

Here's the link to my potential final layout. I'm working within the confines of existing cabinets. I actually thinking of going from separate wall oven & cooktop to a range, but venilation (and a fondness for a certain pro range) is driving that decision.

    Enjoy the process!

I worry about 2 things...The island is a barrier between stove and fridge, and if you wash veggies or whatever in that prep sink, where will you prep? I can see reasons for why things are laid out as they are, but I think I'd prefer the oven and fridge swapped.

And I hope the spice cabinets aren't coming all the way down to the counter....? That's a cool look, but very impractical, hemming in the cooktop without room for pan handles, sliding things off the stove, etc.

I'm agreeing with rhome about swapping the oven and frig. Then I might also push the prep sink to the other end of the island. WHy? Well.. then the counter next to where the oven would go could be a baking counter and for cooking/prep you'd go from frig, turn and use prep sink, slide down next to prep sink for actual prep and a couple of scoots to the cooktop.

I agree with flipping your frig. & oven. I see why you would want the middle island- it'll probably be your main prep space. I would also suggest moving your veggie sink to other end. That way- if someone wants to come in & get a drink or something quick- they aren't getting in your work space.

    Good Luck

The oven has a microwave on top. I am not keen on having oven and microwave so far from the cooktop as I use them simultaneoulsy several times and I hate to trek hot stuff across the room. I would like to have the fridge and oven in the counter as below but would there be concern for fridge door hitting oven handle if opened more than 90 degrees. Anybody has experience with fridge next to wall oven/microwave.

Do you already have the fridge? Do you have the oven chosen, too? Different handles styles can mean less conflict, so it really depends on the particular models you use.

How often do you move hot stuff from stove to oven? I understand your concern, but also know I sometimes access the fridge several times while making one meal, so its proximity to the stove is important to me.

Would a 12" cabinet between the fridge and oven work and help the handle conflict issue?

Ref and oven on cooktop wall, cooktop to center of former oven wall? Maybe even ovens in corner...

I do not have fridge or oven picked out but I donÂt want to be restricted in the future. The 12" cabinet between the 2 is a good idea but would it look awkward? Would it look funny to have 12" counter between the 2? Would there still be sufficient space to the corner?
If I put the oven and microwave in the corner, would that take up a lot of space?

There is microwave/convection oven combination above the oven which I would use quite often for cooking rice, heating hot water for cooking, melting butter, microwaving vegetables, etc. I do use the fridge a lot more but it is cold stuff. I am cooking a couple of dishes at a time which require me to go back and forth from fridge, microwave, sink. I do my prep work on the side of the cooktop so that I can keep an eye on the onions that are frying. I cook Indian food which usually requires frying onions till brown followed with frying spices, tomatoes and other vegetables. So I usually do other prep work while the onions are frying but I need to be right next to cooktop to regularly stir onions. The island will be for landing from fridge, oven, sink, and dishes that are marinating etc. The prep sink does cut into my space, but I usually wash vegetables in the sink and then cut them next to cooktop. I know that would cause water drips on floor.

I have teenage sons who bring friends over quite a bit and I have pizza in the ovens (frozen ofcourse) while I cook Indian food for dh and me. My kids donÂt always eat the Indian food (sometimes too spicy), so I cook another dish for them. It can get real busy for me in the kitchen sometimes. That is why I am so worried about my appliances being far away. At the same time I do need a lot of space on either side of the cooktop for prep work. Totally confused as to what to do.

The spice racks are pull out racks under the counter, so not in the way.

The cooktop has to be on that wall because of venting.

We are leaning towards putting oven next to fridge. Anyone has any experience with that setup?

Even though there were several threads about ovens and fridges next to each other listed on a Google search, I could only find one thread that hasn't been lost, and have linked it below.

Since this site seems to have lost so many of those helpful past threads, you might want to try a new post just asking that question.

Why not flip the island. This one is 10 feet long. I put the frig in two locations because I don't know which you prefer.
