Another 50's bath

After reading about ellenj's bath I thought I would post some pics of what I have in my new home. At first I wanted to gut both baths but I am thinking (with our budget being spent in other areas of the house), that I may try to work with these baths- let me know if anyone has any suggestions:

I am not sure how to post more than one photo so I will just respond to this a few times.

I guess the previous owners had some broken tiles so they replaced the broken with a much more contemporary tile. Anyone know where to get vintage tile so I can replace the newer ones.

Just had an idea- I can tear out this vanity and put in a free standing furniture like one in black??

Here is the Main bath. The blue square cast iron tub will be expensive to replace so that is staying. I am thining of having it painted.

Again- previous owner replaced non matching tiles

And finally the blue sink- by the way, yes that is carpet on the floor and underneath is a very old laminate with asbestos. So I need to put down a new tile floor. Between the pink & brown tile, blue sink, tub and toilet- I am not sure how to pull this main bath together except to keep only the tub and paint it and replace everything else.

In the master bath, the pink and black are staying for a while so I will need to work with these.

    Ideas or suggestions welcome!!!

I gather you don't want to spend a lot on this, so I'm keeping that in mind.
Can I assume from the picture that the shower is OK?
Freestanding cabinet type sink? Not if youÂre trying to keep a 50Âs style going. You could replace the vanity with another built in, keeping the style of the doors fairly simple, and replace the counter and sink if you like. It would be tough to find a pink to match the others unless you were willing to spend quite a bit of money from what IÂve seen. You could go with simple square white tiles for the counter with maybe a black accent tile band as a border. That would tie things together. I saw the narrow black tiles at Home Depot recently and it would look great and still be budget-wise.
That blue sink looks like the same thing my mom has in her house. I wouldnÂt try to piecemeal this bathroom. Is the surface damaged in the blue tub? Is that why you want to paint it, or is it just the color? If you just donÂt care for the colors in here, let it go till you can afford to redo the whole bathroom. If you paint the walls it could make an enormous difference.
I canÂt tell you what color to go with, I never quite trust the colors I see in peopleÂs pictures. It wouldnÂt hurt to get a gallon of cheap white paint and go over the walls to just hide the color thatÂs there. That would give you a blank slate allowing you to perhaps visualize a better color choice.
No bathroom is ever totally hideous. Even the worst can be made to look at least acceptable, and whatÂs acceptable to you can look fantastic to somebody else.

I disagree that 50's bathrooms didn't have cabinets. I've lived in ranches that had them. Here is a link which has pink tiles. Like this one http://ranchredo.com/?p=140 There is even a link here for tiles and floor tiles. http://www.daltileproducts.com/series.cfm?series=83#1718

Linked below is a pink sink, like your blue one. Or if you have salvage yards you might be able to find them. I've even seen the drop-in sinks in pink.

I'm still confused as to what is where. The blue tub and sink in a bathroom, with what for a stool? White? You can find blue toilets. Personally, I would just leave the blue and redo the tile in a white. White and blue are crisp and not everyone in the 50's used colored tile. Plain white from the big box store is a cost effective solution. Painting the tub costs several hundred dollars in my area, although it is an option.

I've never heard of laminate like you are describing. Do you mean old 12" tiles? Those would pop off easily and that's what was in our house. Just warm them up a bit.

So, that's my vote. Blue and white. Pink and brown.

(I can tear out this vanity and put in a free standing furniture like one in black??)..............

Did you mean what I thought you meant, one of those cabinets that are so popular now that mimic antique furniture with a sink top?
There were free standing cainets for sinks, basic style cabinets, but then you'd have a dead space on either side. Somewhere where your toothbrush or mascara would fall down into. A place you were always having to dust. A neat spot for a spider to hole up.

Sorry- I should have been clearer about a few things.

    1) I would like spend about $5000 total to fix up both baths. Is this realistic or not? We took out a home equity loan to fix up the house, but the majority of this is going towards a new kitchen. I cannot justify spending $15,000 on 1 new bath, which is the last quote I received on the main bath to gut it and that was just to put in contractor grade fixtures.

The master bath is the pink & black stand up shower-

(I can tear out this vanity and put in a free standing furniture like one in black??)..............No- I was not really thinking the antique furniture like pieces, but more of something with cleaner lines and a retro fee, with nickel harware that I can tie in to towel racks and things like that.

The main bath is the pink and brown tile with blue fixures-

Gloria- I was thinking the same thing- replace old tiles and make everything white and blue. Maybe a blue & white toile shower curtain can pull it all together.

I think you can get a decent redo on the bathrooms for $5,000 assuming you are having to have a chunk of that for the labor for the tile work.

I think the white tile and toile would look nice in the main bathroom. Get a little creative with the floor.

Can you save and reuse any of the pink tiles from around the blue tub? With the master, I don't see why you couldn't get a bit dramatic and fun in there. I'd get an elcheepo MFD vanity cabinet with a flat smooth surface and paint it black. I would reuse the pink tiles for the counter top and drop in a black sink. I'd put in a black toilet, too. Maybe a bit of silvery paint on the walls? I'd stick with a chrome look for hardware and faucets. (I think you could do some scrounging and pick up a good black toilet and sink at a salvage place if you have one close and that would keep costs down.)

I live in a high labor cost area, so I would have to plan on around $1,000 for materials and the rest for labor. Personally, I think you could have some nice bathrooms until you are ready to do something different.

Even though they aren't your style, I would try and have some fun with these rooms.

I feel so inspirational! I only tried to save my tiles so I could buy myself a little time to save up for a nice remodel. During this summer, I have grown to like the look and for now its stays. Only problem is I ran out of that great SoyGel when I got to the last spot near the toilet. I'm ordering more on Monday to finish up.

I was just in Lowes this week and they had a display of new designed bathroom sets....sinks/tubs/toilets.....blue, yellow, pink. Didn't check the price, was in awe of the return to our 50s.
