sink 'kneehole'?

I used to have an old house with a kitchen feature I would like to replicate, but I'm not sure what it's called or what the drawbacks might be.

The "apron" of the sink was flush with the cabinets, but below that, the cabinet was recessed, probably to the toekick depth. (This wasn't an apron sink--it had a decorative diamond routed into the apron area--but the effect was sort of like an apron sink hanging way over a cabinet. Sorta.)

I know it eats up some cabinet space, but I'm planning for a 30" depth cabinet here anyway. I know it must correspond to the sink depth and might be a tad limiting there too. I know it might annoy my cabinet maker cuz it's weird. Any other drawbacks? (The cabinets will be painted which might make it simpler to trim out.)

And is there a name for this?

Thanks!

Here's a picture. Not a good one. And as if the angle wasn't bad enough, all the drawers were open. I assume that's because they'd been recently painted...

    Fori,

I don't know what to call it other than "recessed under sink cabinet". If you like it I don't know why you shouldn't do it? Will it affect whatever you have stored under the sink? Will it bother the plumber? (Fix-it, not install.)

What to call it? "Retro design element" !!!

I think that's cute. If you're going to have 30" bases on that wall, just use a 24" base for the sink and it should work fine.

Just out of curiosity, did having the recess make standing at the sink more comfortable, or is this an aesthetic choice?

If you go to the Kennebec Company website, you'll see that this is the only kind of sink base they do. You can get lots of examples for your GC/cabinet maker.

    Thanks all.

Pllog, I don't think it would bug the plumber too much--maybe less because he won't have to crawl back as far. Anyway I'm usually the one under the sink...it would reduce storage but I'm starting with a 30" deep base, it'll still end up a tad larger than normal. Just with the storage conveniently tucked away behind the plumbing. Hmm. Rear drain sink, minimum.

Raenjapan, I honestly do not recall if it was more comfortable. I should remember because that place had no dishwasher. I kind of think it was NOT comfortable because the sink was too far back and I am not tall. The counter was an odd height (and depth, actually). I think I might be subconsciously trying to replicate my old kitchen, in some ways. I should see a professional in the mental health business but I'm taking it out on my cabinet guy instead. I already knew I wanted those knobs again, but apparently that's not where it ends!

Cheri, thanks for that link--those kitchens are clean enough to show pictures of. The picture I have isn't really ready for polite company (sorry guys!). I can say that picture was taken mid-facelift (true) but it's not like it was ever cleaner...

    Fori,

Here's a picture of my "recessed" sink cabinet. I have a farmhouse sink. I'm 5'8", and my DW is 5'3" tall. We both feel that being able to get our feet under the protruding part of the sink has made it easier to work at the sink-less bending and stretching!

You do lose some storage space, but for us that isn't a problem.

I also chose the recessed cabinet to add a bit of architectural interest. I didn't want a wall of cabinets that were all the same depth.

Thanks, Rich. I do believe I've been envious of your kitchen before!
