I've used Rub n Buff and while it doesn't 'move' easily once it's on,with turpentine/paint remover it would come right off of the glazed vase w/o ruining the finish. If you have an old piece of porcelain or even ceramic, give it a try. I've been working with various paints for years, and would bet there wouldn't be a problem with removal on a glazed surface since it's non-porous.

Hmm, I don't know what gilt cream is, sorry. I'd love to see the vases, though

I have also used rub n' buff (and I love the stuff) and while it usually can be removed with turpentine, I don't know if it's a good idea to mess with an antique. Is it very valuable? If Rub n Buff did destroy the value of the vase, would you be ok with that??

Thanks--good idea to go right to the source and ask. I also have to figure out the possible effect of paint thinner on silver, since the part I want to change is actually metal.

I also had the weird idea of using a little food coloring. Seems harmless and might give me the effect I want, which is not gilt but as I said, a silver with a pale golden hue.
