Shelf above range/below vent hood?

We have a nice stainless steel backsplash behind the range leading up to the hood. I've seen some nice photos of stainless shelves above the range, but I'm afraid it will require a lot of cleaning to get the grease off a) the shelf and b) the stuff on the shelf.

Anyone have experience to share???

I have fold down wire shelves, which I like because they're up out of the way most of the time. When up, there is a shallow shelf piece there for small things like S&P shakers.

I was watching "Reba" the other day, and she has a such a jumble of stuff on that shelf over her range. If it were real it would probably be a fire hazard.
