Help with new layout

We are in the process of planning for a kitchen remodel. We would like to improve on the current layout by adding seating, more storage, replacing the 36" cooktop w/ a 48", and having a sink closer to the cooktop.

We are a family of 6 (3 adults and 3 kids). There are often two cooks. I do bake fairly often. We don't need a big fridge/freezer because there is a freezer in the pantry and a fridge in the garage. We like having the coffee maker between the fridge and sink.

Seating in kitchen

More cabinets

New layout ---

The island is in the middle of the "triangle"

Is the corner of the island going to be awkward in front of the oven?

Questions

I would like a glass front cabinet. Where should it go?

Should I switch the placement of the oven and cooktop?

How about your glass front (upper) cabinet to the left of the sink?

Do you use the dining room much or will you usually eat in the bfast room and at the island? I'm asking because the fridge might be better on the bfast room end of the stove wall if all the eating happens down there...especially if snackers and beverage grabbers are coming in from the family room. That would also improve the triangle that includes your stove and prep sink. If you did that, I'd also shift the prep sink so that it's next to the overhang.

If you moved the fridge off the sink wall, you could have glass front cabinets at both ends of the sink run.

    rhome:
Moving the fridge is an interesting idea. But, it wouldn't leave much room to the side of the stove because the coffee maker would need to be moved there.

The upper cabinets to the left of the sink are convenient for plates since it's close to the DW.

Did you want the glass cabinets for dishes? Not sure whether you're saying that is good for the glass cabs, or bad...

Can the coffee pot go somewhere on the sink wall? It'd be closer to the dishes/cups.

The coffee maker would need to be near the fridge for those who like milk in their coffee.

I would not put dishes in the glass cabinets. That's the issue I had with where to put the glass fronts. The best place visually doesn't fit with the function.

How about frig where your "current" ovens are then either new ovens on the angle or at the other end of the stove run? You can keep the coffee pot on the sink wall and then have your glass cabinets. Frig will be close to both coffee and stove.

I was thinking it'd be most important to have the coffee pot near a sink and the mugs. And is having the coffee pot and fridge together a higher priority than having the fridge next to the family room and the table? I hope I'm not sounding argumentative or sarcastic...I'm just trying to understand, because I know people do things differently. If you eat in the bfast room, which I don't know yet, table setters and diners will have to go through the whole kitchen to get to the fridge...Milk for cereal and to drink, condiments, ice, etc. And the kids and guests will have to go through the work area from the family room to get a beverage or a snack? I'm afraid I'm repeating myself, so I'll stop so I'm not badgering...

I incorrectly assumed you wanted the dishes with the glass doors, as that's what I usually see them used for. You'll have to let us know what you want to use them for so we know how to advise where to put them. :-)

What would you put in the glass cabinets?

Do you most often eat in the kitchen or the dining room?
Where do people in search of a drink or snack come from? Kitchen table, dr, fr or the mudroom door?

I would put wine glasses and decorative crystal/barware in the glass cabinets.

We most often eat in the breakfast room.

People most often come from the breakfast room and family room for a drink/snack. The only time they come from the mudroom is when they come up from the basement.

    Thanks for everyone's help.

Thanks, I think your revised layout has a lot of advantages over mine.

Do you think the dishwasher should be on the other side of the sink to make it closer to put pots and pans away that would live by the stove and oven?

Also, is there a reason not to have the fridge at the end of the wall instead of having a small cabinet there?

We have dishwashers on both sides of our sink and I much prefer clearing the one closer to the dish storage, since dishes, glasses/cups, and silverware usually are a bigger part of the things to put away from the dishwasher, more than pots and pans. It's easy to take the 1-3 pots and pans to put away farther than to try to take many handfuls of glasses, plates, bowls, cups, and silverware. Plus, dishes will come from the table to put in the dishwasher, so nicer to have it toward that end.

I'll let Bmore speak for herself, but I can see advantages to having the coffee counter on the outside end if people will want to access it from the table or from the family room. Especially if people will want to access it while cooking is going on, this way they aren't getting in the way of the cook who is trying to get in the fridge.
