Moving air intake?

We have a house that is moving quickly towards it's 100th birthday and we love it. Well .. everything except where the idiots who lived here before us put a very large floor intake for the heat and air system. It's on the floor with 1/4 of it in front of the front door!.. Issues here are that we have wondeful old hardwood floors that we want to keep and few other choices of where to move this thing given the way the house works now. What I could do is loose the 1/4 part that is in front of the door and build a colonade to the side of the front door and move the venting to the upright plane of the colonade.

This would serve to keep huge wads of dog fur from being sucked off the dog and right onto the current floor vent that i have to vac most every day and it would open up greater general surface intake area. But I would lose the 1/4 of the current intake floor area.

Anybody ever done such a thing? I am going to call my heat and air guy to ask how much intake our DS unit needs but thought I would see if anyone had ever tried such a thing.
