Sources for 9' square rugs

We have a room where 9' square (or maybe 8x9, but that seems even harder to find) is the ideal size. I Googled it, and found some sites that offer them, but a lot of the sites seem kind of questionable (mostly in terms of the quality of the rugs), and the selection is small.

Does anyone have advice for where to look for high quality rugs in this size? Or does such a thing not exist?

I am facing the same issue in looking for an odd size area rug for my living room. I have decided to have one made. Carpeting comes in 12 foot rolls, so you would buy a piece that is 9x12 feet and have it cut and bound. Binding costs $1.50-$2.00 per linear foot in my area.

Do you just go to a regular carpet store for that?

We like the "Oriental rug" style, and it doesn't seem like that kind of thing tends to come in rolled carpet (nor does it lend itself well to being cut to size). But I guess it's an option if we can find something that would work.

We ordered our rug...8' sq from regency rugs on ebay...they sell new stuff and it arrived quickly and was what we ordered. We were quite happy with it...

You are right, you won't find the traditional oriental rugs on rolls. But, yes, any carpet store, or Home Depot or Lowes, etc. will cut make a rug for you.

I saw a photo where they had used multiple smaller rugs under a table. I think it was in a work space. It looked pretty cool.

I needed a square rug under my table and tried using multiples. In my case the result is not great because I used rugs I already had and they didn't really go together, but mostly because I had to overlap them to get a square. Nevertheless I can now see how it could be very interesting to compose a patchwork of small, low-pile orientals under a table where you could see the plan but they wouldn't be in traffic getting tripped over.

If I can find the picture again, I'll post it.

Most bigger oriental rugs stores have a custom rug dept where they will have a rug of your design made to order.

When my girlfriend was looking for a rug a few years ago they said the custom rugs were similar in price to in stock rugs.

If you want to use an oriental pattern in a square rug, you can have a rug merchant make a mitered border from a roll of oriental-style stair runner around a dark solid in navy or dark red or whatever the dominant ground color is.

Here are some images of runners:

The FLOR tiles could be an option for a hard to fit room - they have solids and patterns, so you could create and border, etc..

I've been looking for a 10 x 10 rug and the only area rug mfg. I've found that makes them (also 8 x 8 square) is Surya. Unfortunately they don't have the colors I'm looking for. Some other area rug mfgs. say they will make custom sizes. Also, some hand-made orientals come in square sizes. Try Greenfront furniture in Farmville, VA. They had some square rugs last time I was there. You could call and ask for their rug dept.
