would this kitchen layout work for you?

Please tell me what you think of the layout of the kitchen. The walls are already up, so I'm not sure what, if anything could be changed.

I see 2 concerns at first glance: Not sure you'll be able to open the freezer door with it right up against the wall, and I'm not sure you'll be able to stand at the sink with the dishwasher door open.

I would want more drawers in your base cabinets...I have mostly drawers, and often wish I'd done banks of drawers in the few doored cabinets I have.

    Best wishes.

Looks ok with one exception. You will not be able to stand at the sink to load the dishwasher. Your dishwasher door essentially opens into the space where you would be standing. This is often a problem with corner sinks and dishwashers You may need to change the base cabinet layout a bit and move the dishwasher away one cabinet from the sink to give you room to load.

What are the dimensions? Where does the large opening at the bottom go? DR? What is the area at the top? Breakfast? FR? The aisle between the peninsula and the left wall of cabinetry looks very narrow. NKBA guidelines for an aisleway is 42" between cabs. Some people are comfortable with slightly less, but not a lot less.

The thing that strikes me as really needing changing is the batwing sink. Corner sinks can be really useful, but the batwing design is a much maligned one because of the large amt of counter between the two smallish bowls. Makes for much more cleanup.

I would move the sink and dishwasher from the corner to the peninsula since you won't be able to open the DW while you're standing in front of the sink. Not being able to load from the sink without standing awkwardly/bending would be a real pain.

I agree with mom2reese about moving the sink and dishwasher to the peninsula. I would put the dishwasher at the end of the peninsula and the sink next to the corner. The other thing that I noticed was that you don't really have any landing space when getting things out of the fridge. I would swap the fridge and the oven stack. While you then don't have a landing space for the ovens, I at least use the fridge a lot more during the day than the oven(s).

    Waves to everybody

I won't repeat what others have said. In addition...

    • Consider moving the MW over to the oven stack (1 oven, correct?) rather than over the cooktop. This...
      • Puts the MW on the periphery so it's easily accessed from the kitchen but snackers can also get to it w/o getting underfoot of those working in the kitchen
    • Puts the MW near the refrigerator...most MW'd food comes from the refrigerator or freezer. It just so happens that in your case it also puts it near the pantry (those are pantry cabs next to the refrigerator, correct?)

Allows you to get a "real" hood for over the cooktop. Dedicated vent hoods do a much better job of venting fumes, grease, smoke, steam, etc. than over the range MWs.
Puts the MW at a better work height & better work conditions (no reaching over a hot cooktop/pot or going up on tip-toes to see in).
You can have a full-size MW (or smaller if that's what you want)
The wall oven probably should be lower than shown...I find the lower oven of our double ovens is actually at a better height than the top oven. The bottom of the bottom oven is 19" off the floor, the top oven 43-1/2". Actually, a couple more inches for the bottom oven would be even better...but it's also fine where it is now. Your oven looks like it's 36" off the floor...I would consider lowering it to 20-24 inches or so...then put the MW above it.
Another concern I have is that refrigerator/pantry/oven stack wall overall.

Right now, you have no landing space for the refrigerator. The counters across the aisle are (1) too far away and (2) cross a main doorway...neither of which are good. The counters to the right of the oven are also too far away.

You also want landing space for your oven...very important!

I think some rearranging of that entire wall may be in order.
Consider "boxing in" the refrigerator so it looks built-in. Surround it with 3/4" finished panels and put a full-depth cabinet over it (or, pull a shallower cabinet forward so it looks like it's full depth.
How much room is there b/w the end of the peninsula & the counter across the way? [Counter edge-to-counter edge, not cabinet-to-cabinet]

Wow! Thinks for the replys. All of ya'll concerns I had also, just takes someone else saying it to be sure.

Rhome: You have a good point about not being able to open the freezer door. When we gave the KD our measurments and where we wanted things placed, one of the things he moved was the fridge from where the pantry is. I thought about adding more drawers but we have ALOT of small appliances that I think would be easier to store in doored cabinets. Please let me know if I'm wrong, Ive never had drawers for cabinets.

Palimpsest: Along with moving the fridge the KD also moved the dw from the left side of the sink to the right. I thought the reasoning was to have it closer to the upper cabinets, but I think I would rather be able to get to my sink than be closer to the cabinets. lol

Laxsupermom: I'm not sure of the dimensions. The large opening goes into the DR. The smaller does not go into a room it has enough space for the bar and to walk through (it has french doors to go out to the back porch). I didn't think he was going to add as many cabinets at the end as he did. He said we neede at least 3 feet walk space. My DH calculated it up last night and he said it is a little over 3 ft. I can't decide on the batwing myself, I had bought it knowing I wanted a corner sink (b/c I love the view from wear my sink will be). Lets just say my mind keeps changing. Just woundering how and where does it make for more clean up?

Mom2reese: I think it may be too late to move the sink from the corner to the peninsula. We have a basement, so there is already a hole in the floor right under where the sink will be for plumbing. But I agree the DW must move!

Dkitchenreno: I love the idea of swaping the fridge, like I had mentiond above that is where we had it, but I think the KD complaint was how far the fridge sticks out compared to the pantry, ect.

*Note to all I think I have decided against the seperate oven and stove top and making it one peice and putting it where the stove top sits in the design. I can not make up my mind, but I hate to spend the extra money on getting it seperate. I am open to your suggestions on that as well.

    Thanks alot!!

You don't really appreciate how nice big drawers can be until you have them...At least I didn't. I love having my small appliances in drawers. --No stooping and crawling/reaching into the back of a dark cabinet. This is great for all of them, but particularly nice for the appliances that have pieces, because you can see and grab everything so easily. The other option you have is having pullout shelves--those are the same as having drawers, but first you have to open both doors (fully so the pullout can get past them)...so it's 2 steps and more room to accomplish the same task.

I've never had a corner sink myself, but agree that they are nice for looking out. Here's a link to a thread about batwing sinks. There's another link to a discussion about corner sinks in general on that thread.

I emaile my KD and will get him to move the DW to the end of the bar, that should help with loading and then also with loading, b/c I could put all my main dishes (plates, bowls, and glasses) in the cabinets next to the pantry (on revised layout).

I told him the concern for opening the freezer door on the fridge, so he revised the plan and said he thought it might look cool to put the fridge between the two pantrys.

    Tell me what you think.

Thank you Laxsupermom for the link, I will check it out.

Would the fridge look better between the two pantrys or should the two pantrys be beside each other so the fridge can be by the counter top?

    Thanks for your inputs.

If you plan a side-by-side or French door fridge, the open door will be in the way of the counter beside it anyway, so the best landing space for either of those styles would be across the aisle or on a counter that would be accessible with the door open...so a cabinet away. In other words, if you're going with one of those fridge styles, I wouldn't worry about having counter space right next to it.

There are other ways to have a sink in the corner than the bat-wing. Are you able to lay a lasagna pan flat in it to soak, for instance? Can you put a skillet in it to wash without having to tilt it way up because of the handle? Really check the usability of the bowl sizes before it's installed and you're stuck fighting with it for years to come.

Nothing original here. I would say, though, that my inlaws had a corner sink with a dishwasher in the same position yours is on the layout. It is a nightmare. I cannot tell you how annoying it is not to be able to put plates directly from the sink into the dishwasher. I'd have to stack them on the counter and then load separately.

Refrigerator landing situation is not good either. You have a great space, though, Keep tweaking things until it is functional.

I THINK they make an L-shaped sink that is completely open. Of course it may double your budget. :-)

If you are not getting a close-to-counterdepth refrigerator is there a way to pull the tall cabinets just a bit forward? This means fitting some additional tall panel behind them along the exposed side, but I think it looks better if the fridge is not hanging out too much, especially if you get a SS with black sides.

Just wanted to add that I keep all of my small appliances in a 30" drawer and I love it.

If I got rid of the bat wing, what kind of a sink would you suggest? Would I want a double bowl sink or a single bowl sink?

Also I'm about to throw my hands up in the air to give up on this layout! lol I have no idea how I can rearange everything to make it any better. lol

You may want to add a rolling cart as an island & landing space. I'd switch the R/F & oven stack. I also agree about moving the DW to the peninsula so it's closer to the dining area & not in the way of the sink. I've had a corner location for the sink & I highly recommend a large single there, not divided or batwing, or move it out of the corner to the cooktop side.

This is doable without "big" plumbing changes, but there is some. To get back some counter space, make both sides 30" deep or do peninsula on the ref side if possible.

I think I would go pantry, ref, counter, ovs on the ref wall.
