You're paying them, right? I'm curious to see what others say, but it seems to me that if a tradesperson quotes you a price, that is the amount that they are expecting to receive for the job. If they would like more money they would bid higher.

Tipping is not customary. Having lunch brought in, Pizza, McDonald's, Subway, etc. a couple times on long projects is not uncommon tho and kind of a nice thing to do if they're doing a super job for you.

I would never take tips nor do I authorize them on my contracted jobs.

"painter-tipping"....Hmmmmm...
Seems kinda mean...like "cow-tipping"!?!

(Oh...never mind...BAD attempt at humor!!)

Thanks for your opinions. I'm just not used to hard workers. It took 9 months to paint the house ten years ago. The painters would paint for a few hours, then lie in the grass talking to each other, then quit. And they charged $26,000. This time, they work all day without any noise (no radio, little talking); it's a new experience!

Referring them would also be a great way to show your appreciation. Lunch is nice, but nothing better than getting jobs due to client referral. Ask for some of their cards and don't stick them in a draw, instead be sure to give them to people who compliment or ask about your home.
