Reading room needs work

We have a room that I've furnished by using furniture from many other parts of the house that are no longer needed. This is a room that we rarely use but it's seen from the entry of home so it needs to look nice. I need suggestions for what I can do to finish off the room and make it more cozy and usuable as a reading room. I don't have the budget now to buy new furniture so I need to use the major pieces I have but can add accessories, etc. Would love advice on this room.

I've forgotten how to add multiple photos. I'll figure it out and add different angles of the room as I can.
Thanks,

Dinobambino

    Lovely start.

Couple of quick thoughts: do you have another smaller chair you could put in the corner by the window? If not, maybe a large plant would work, though I could see a small palm behind another chair or rocker. Even as a reading room, sometimes it's nice to have someone join for reading or quiet conversation. I'd try the chaise just a little more into the far corner and place the small table on the other side. Do you have a short bookcase to go on the far wall under the sconces and print so that room gives the impression of really being a reading room? A floor lamp or small lamp in place of the candle is necessary to read during non-daylight hours.

Without seeing any other images, a preliminary idea or two....what about reversing the whatever-you-call-it-thing-you-sit-on so the head is in front of the window? A small area rug in front of it. Somewhat close to the foot of the piece, the stool that's under the desk. Switch the art - the dark-framed piece might be a little too small for the space between the sconces, but to me the combo of pale flowers on the fabric and similarly pale art/frame is a little too bland. The dark frame of the piece currently over the desk might look better.

The desk - I'm not sure. Same with that small table. It would help to see other angles of the room.

Also, I meant to add but forgot: move the sitting-on-reading-thing closer to the window. To me, too much empty space between the window and the piece of furniture.

could someone tell me what shows up at this link. I've forgotten how to use my photobucket account. Sorry!

Lovely chaise! I wish I had one. I also think you should move it so the head was backed up to the window, with the small table on the left as you are sitting on the chaise. Would like to see the rest of the room to see if there is another location for the desk so the corner does not look too crowded. There should be a reading lamp or other lighting behind the head of the chaise. A small bookcase would be appropriate, too!

having the chaise face the bookcase, a reading lamp, a lower table for books and a cup of tea. A comfy throw. Artwork. Lovely spot!

Yes, beautiful room. I'd like to see the chaise turned around, too, so it faces the bookshelves.

I couldn't make out from your additional images how much space there is to the left of the desk (as seen in the first image you posted) and the door. Is there any room there for the desk? In fact, do you use that desk much if at all? If it's not really necessary, you could take it out of the room completely. Then, angle the chaise (aha - it's a chaise!) such that its head is under the dark-framed art and its foot is under the light-framed one. If you can find a larger and lower side table, use that; otherwise, since you say you rarely use the room, just do without - the room is primarily for show, right? The small table you currently have seems almost too small, too tall, and of the wrong style (and, as you've pointed out, just something you had elsewhere), to work well with the chaise. If the budget allows, a decent-sized rug, perhaps oval or round. Another idea - Does your budget have funds for something like a sisal or something like that that's pretty much room-sized? With, perhaps, a round or oval rug on top of it, and containing some of the darker colors in the chaise. And some curtains, also in a darker color.

I added a tree from storage and moved somethings around. If I keep the desk in this area, I will move the artwork and sconces to cente above desk, but want opinons first

I'd put the back of the chaise in the corner by the window, with the foot of the chaise pointing out to the center of the room. To make this work as a reading room, you need a lamp by the chaise, either a floor lamp or a table lamp on a different table.

To cozy the room up, a throw on the foot of the chaise, an area rug and a fabric window treatment--either panels or a roman shade or a balloon shade. A book case filled with books.

    Pretty room!

Another vote to angle the chaise under the window -- and facing out towards the door ....

Then add a tall thin standing lamp by the chaise.

Yes -- if possible -- find a shorter and slightly larger table to sit beside the chaise .... to hold a drink, cup, mug etc.

Yes -- a small textured sisal rug would be wonderful in this room!

Perhaps add a large basket (think of the shape of a antique laundry basket) under the main artwork to stash a blanket and extra magazines (LOL!)

camlan..in one of the above photos there's a wall of book shelves.

I need to find another table. Dont think I have one. I also really like the basket idea. Gotta look for one of those to.

    thanks marylou..

How do I download photos like that?? It's been a long time since I've been on and have forgotten.

I also think it would look better if the chaise was angled from the corner with a pretty floor lamp behind it. That way you can still look out the window, and have more floor space.

Does this dark table work with these curtains in this room? Trying to make it a cozy room. The curtains are not hung yet. There hanging by a piece of tape till I decide what to keep.

Nice! The only thing I'd change is putting the end table between the window and chaise, with a couple of inches clearance between the three.

Thanks for the idea. Does this look better. I was trying to hide the oiulet and wires. Does it look bad to see them in your opinion?

    Does this help?

I think someone mentioned angling it in from the cornier so it is diagonally in the room. I see where you are trying to have the smaller arm facing out, but if it is angled than you can still enter the chair from the smaller arm side.

Ditto ellendi as I mentioned earlier. I guess you need to decide whether the idea to suggest a reading nook or a place to gaze at the street? While you said the 1st rug was borrowed from another area, in the pix the new one reads much too harsh whereas the softer tones and print of the smaller rug worked better with the chintz and art. Can this 2nd rug be returned? Try Tuesday Morning and thrift stores like Goodwill or Ebay for inexpensive rug solutions.

I would angle from the corner too. With such a nice window you get natural light during the day. The way you have it now looks like you'd get a lot of sunlight in your eyes. A tall lamp in the very corner behind the chaise would be perfect for night reading. It all depends on how you like to read. I'd love a cozy room like that. Nice bookcase too!

I want to echo what some of the previous posters have said.. I would position the chaise with it's back towards the window to maximize light for daytime reading and place a floor lamp or a table lamp with good light over the shoulder for night time reading. If this is a room where reading wl happen, the functional layout is very important IMHO. Love our cushy chaise. Just the place for long lazy Sunday afternoons. I would love to see a large table by the chaise where a pile of books can rest comfortably and there is room for a snack and a cup of tea.

Back angled into corner, away from window, with foot of chaise toward the center of the room. It looks awkward the way it is now.

Your picture at 15:15, swap the chaise and the desk so the chaise is back to where it originally was but angled more out into the room. The new rectangle table goes between the two windows with the basket underneath it. Reading lamp behind chaise in its new position. You can use the bookcases for setting books and drinks. Or you could use a low, small table, possibly a stool, between the chaise and the bookcases.

I agree..I keep wanting to reach into your pic and rotate that chaise so it faces into the room more with its back to the corner.

Maybe the sun would get in your eyes, but I'll admit, I love to look out a window while sitting in a comfy chair, so I would prefer to have it angled at least a bit toward the window. :)

I really like the textured sheer curtains. I'd have thought a heavy fabric was needed, but those sheers look great. Nice transformation, and I really envy you having a dedicated reading room with that comfy chaise. Have fun reading!

It looks fabulous! Love your reading room.

thanks awm and boop.. I chose these curtains because I was afraid a heavier curtain would make the room too dark. Even with the windows with the dark wood in the room, this room tends to be one of the darkest rooms in the house. I'm glad you like them!
