When to remove rug?

I am just about ready to paint my rooms and was wondering when is the best time to take up the wall to wall carpet. It is vacuumed and I thought it would be better to leave it down until after all the painting is done and then take it up and do some spot touch up if needed. What is the best way to handle this?
