Our kitchen

We are t-3 weeks to demolition. I am posting our pre-kitchen and our plans. I didn't discover GardenWeb until after our plans were finalized - so hope I did OK. I do qualify as one of the many over thinkers on Garden Web! Anyone else want to admit to this problem?

I played with 2 plans - one of the plans added a peninsula on the east end - but then figured out the not enough "butt" room to open the oven and turn around to get things out. So I had to fire the first designer. Also the GC that worked with the KD said we couldn't get rid of the soffits...

The second designer kept our kitchen linear but the GC that she recommended spent a lot of time looking into our soffits (and the soffits are very religious right now - holey!) He also discussed with DH as DH was very worried about any changes to the upstairs air circulation but DH was satisfied (Whew!)

I also posted on the lighting forum - but won't go into details on the lighting.

Current kitchen - I really never liked the design as it didn't flow - to empty the dishwasher - I had to hit 3 different walls!

{{gwi:1606827}}

{{gwi:1677119}}

New plans - I wanted a wall oven and cooktop vs a range - but wasn't sure it would work.

I end up with "zones" and not a triangle.

The bake zone - has a 45 inch counter run between the fridge and the oven - it can double for general prep.

The cabinets will hold the baking items, baking pans, and general casserole pans - plus I can store my breadmaker, Cuisinart, and a few other small appliances in the tall drawer under the oven. I will have a Wolf e series oven starting at 21 inches off the floor and a GE advantium speed oven above it. I wanted the main oven a little higher but with the drop down door on the speed oven, this was as high as we could go.

Wash zone - all of the dishes, glasses, and flatware are to the right of the sink/dishwasher - so no more hunting cabinets!

Prep zone - I actually have several options depending on whether I am baking or cooking!

Serving Zone - the dishes, flatware, and glasses are on the wall closest to the dining room! Yeah!!!

Birdseye view - the main part of the kitchen has 8 foot ceiling and the sun room has a cathedral 12 foot ceiling.

The sink is actually a Blanco cascade with one drain

{{gwi:1677120}}

South wall elevation - this was a big change as it moved the cooktop to this side of the kitchen. We are putting a Broan evolution hood over the Wolf induction cooktop.

The sink is Blanco cascade (Thank you Gardenweb for your help on this!)

If I found gardenweb earlier - the garden window would be counter height - but too late to change this item.

Planning to put a Waterstone PLP Parche series faucet and the waterstone soap dispenser - still haven't decided to center the faucet or put at the divider.

http://waterstoneco.com/p-parche-5400.cfm We are getting the antique brass color

{{gwi:1677121}}

West wall - this has all of my dishes, glasses, and flatware!

{{gwi:1677122}}

Now for the sun room(aka breakfast nook)!

Both designers originally built the bench along the long wall but I felt it was too linear and people sitting there weren't part of the kitchen. So, I designed a his and her cave (storage unit for our bicycle gear). The lower part has drawers. Then we have a "cutting board" that pulls out to use as a desk when needed. The upper part of the cabinet is like a TV cabinet - so the doors drop into pockets (to meet DH requirement). It will have drawers and shelves and not a TV - but he can leave it open during the week and we can close it for company!

In front of the bench(which will have a small back), I am planning to order a Royal Mission lift top table in cherry and put a Hubbardton Forge oval ribbon chandelier above it. That way - we can have folks sit and enjoy or use it for breakfast.

On to colors

Countertop is Cambria Buchingham and the cabinets will be Brookhaven Autumn with a black glaze - this really enhances our current floor -which is the only vestige (other than the fridge and DW) The cabinet example is for color only - the style is different.

Backsplash will wait until the countertop installed.

So, what is left?

Finalize the lighting and switch placement - we are going to use cans with LED trim fits, GMLightbar under cabinet but still have to decide on the chandelier, decorative center lighting vs cans, and how many cans, etc.

Also planning to install angled under cabinet plugmolds

So, mostly can't change too much - but hoping I did OK. I can use some positive reinforcement for doing most without GardenWeb - but know that I found you...

Thanks for listening!!

Your chosen counters are beautiful. You must be so excited to be getting a new kitchen and really, one of the best parts for us was getting rid of those useless soffits as well. Hope everything goes well. Can't wait to see final pics. I'm not going to look at the kitchen for examples of bad planning because it is going to be better than what you have now.

I too didn't find GW until our plans were set in stone and there are a couple of things that I would do differently but when I remember what I had, I am in kitchen heaven.

Thanks for your support! I already identified a few things that I could have done differently but each change is $200+, so it will be better than before!!

    Hi all
Lots of activity on GW this weekend, so my plans were buried quickly, so moving them up in the queue!
    Thanks for your support.

I can tell you've put a lot of thought into it and your kitchen looks wonderful! Is that a window seat, between the cabinets...and do you plan to have a table there, or in front of the window? Just curious.

Also, I love the way all the dishes are now by the dining room (very good idea) and your cabinets are beautiful! My only concern, I wouldn't wait to pick out a backsplash. That seems to be a major problem on GW. Do you have any ideas? Your granite is so pretty, you should have a lot of options :)

Wow! To echo lavender_lass's comment - You have Certainly thought things through! It sounds to me like the layout will work very well for you. You knew what you disliked about your old kitchen, you knew your traffic and use patterns, and then you went ahead and designed your ideal kitchen.

I was questioning the breakfast nook table thing too. Make sure you leave adequate space for whatever type of seating you're using (chairs, benches, etc.), both when people are seated AND when the chairs are pulled back when people get up from/get into the seat. That was our big mistake when we were planning our kitchen - we didn't leave enough space to pull the chairs back, and had to completely reconfigure the table and chairs (I originally wanted an L bench, but it didn't work out). That mistake meant we needed to change the light fixture as well as its placement.

Another fun thing to think about is wall color. But, that is something that you can pick out much later.

Enjoy the process and best wishes! (And I am SOOO jealous that you are able to get rid of your soffits! Take a whack at them for me, would you? Lol!)

Thanks for your support. It was so hard doing this on my own, especially when I had to fire the first KD - 3 times I had to question measurement.

Good question on the sunroom. Yes, it is a bench seat between the 2 caves. We are hoping to add a small back to it.

We plan to put a Royal Mission Lift top table. The table is 48 inches by 30 inches. It looks like a coffee table but it rises up to become a table - solves the chair problem!
It will only work for the 2 of us. What I like is someone can be in the kitchen and feel like they area part of the kitchen and not be a "wall flower" on the side of the kitchen and takes away the linear aspect of the room.
I couldn't copy/paste - but the table is made by the Amish in Indiana - you can get a lot of different finishes (and they will try to match if I send a sample)

I am waiting til after the bench is done before I order - just in case the height is wrong (and therefor the chandelier).

Lavender - I am working on the backsplash but nothing final - I want some ideas, but may not order until we are closer.

Bella - Absolutely , will take a hammer to the soffits for you!

Actually, I may run away during the demolition and leave my DH to handle this piece. I need to go visit DM. DD passed away last summer and I try to visit episodically (500+ miles away, so can't just drive over for the night)

Thanks again for your confidence in my plan! It really means a lot to me. I felt so bad firing the first KD - but I shouldn't have to figure out that it doesn't work. She stuck to her guns and said it met code - I said, that I am thin and I couldn't do a 360

Gotto go - Heath tile is on the phone

I was so scared doing this on my own.
Now I have all of my new GW friends!
I will post as we go along!!!
    Thank you again

Your new kitchen is going to be lovely. I love your cabinets and countertop (is sooo similar to my granite: delicatus brown).

However, I must confess, I cannot read those kitchen plans very well. And it always amazes me when Lavendar seems to be able to *see* actually how everything will work .... yikes, how DOES she do that????

I am much better at looking at something all done ... but from what I can glean from your plans ... it's going to be lovely ;)

I agree - my first assignment about 25 years ago was to look at the plans for our new space. I took one look and was lost - I had to learn the terminology and the symbols.
I still struggle looking at other kitchen plans
Thanks so much for your support!!
    I really appreciate it

I love all the drawer space you have! And the cabinet color choice and Cambria color are so delicious together!!

Do you have a drawing of the refrigerator wall elevation?

It looks, from the birdseye view, that you still have a work triangle, as well as work zones. It seems to be a very effectient layout!

Thanks for asking and the vote of support.
    Here is the fridge/oven elevation.
    {{gwi:1677124}}
It is 45 inches between the two appliances - max drawer is 42 and max upper without a divider is 36, so went with a 15/30 which solved my "pot holder" issue. Maybe I should have reversed the 2 but it will work as is.

Also for those who asked - this is the table we are considering - will either try to match the cherry or possibly not match and go with maple

And the chandelier above the table - have not ordered as of yet..Haven't done enough overthinking yet!!

The coffee table/breakfast table combo is a great idea! Clearly, you have put so much thought into all aspects.

You mentioned the potholder drawer, which I'm assuming is the small set of drawers to the right of the fridge. Is there any reason you can't just switch the two sets around when the kitchen is installed? Seems to me that wouldn't be a problem...just a thought.

I love it when the first word that comes to mind is "Woooowwwww."

Your counter and cabs are gorgeous!.
Everything else sounds well thought out, so I'll leave those types of observations to the experts. :)

    I love how it's LOOKING!

abfabamy-I can check to see if that is possible.
I know any changes cost $$ but if they have a finished side, it should work.

CEFreeman - you made my night!
    Thanks!!!

I'll chime in with "I love your counter and cabinets" Is that counter a manufactured stone? I looks just like my granite! Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks! It is great getting some positive feedback. I was so afraid that I had blown it by not finding GW first.

It is Cambria Buckingham. Pretty amazing how far the engineered stone has come in the past few years. I took a chunk into a couple tile stores and they all said they loved my "granite". I didn't have the heart to tell them it was engineered.
Would love to see your backsplash as I am struggling with a match.

    You asked, I came. :)

You made a lot of progress on your own. It'll be nice to watch your progress. There will still be plenty of decisions to make yet--both known and unknown. Sometimes it feels like it never ends. But now you have this community to help through the complicated ones.

Like Blfenton, I won't comment on your layout as that's a done deal. I will say that I prefer my knives directly in my prep zone, which for you is between the sink and the cooktop, rather than across the way.

Good luck with the icky soffits! Having mine gone made my low ceilings feel sooo much taller. Post pics along the way, please.

A2---things are looking great! We are very much alike! I live less than 30min from you! I too thought it all through before we started! Although, following this thread, I will tell you I picked my splash first! I was having trouble deciding on granite. KD suggested looking at tile, after 4 tile stores I found 1 thati really loved! So, we worked off that for the granite and final cab color!

You are also the only other person that seems to love hubberton as much as me! I just ordered 2 pendents, drum shade for over the table, a d a semi flush formthe foyer! Bought a dining room chandy from them last year...best light I have ever owned! Congrats!

That light fixture is a stunner. Compliments!
    ____

I know that your plans are set, but my eye goes to that narrow cab to right of sink. Your plans are set, but these ideas may be useful for someone else.

Deep drawers/cabs less than 12 inches wide are very hard to find a use for. Would be better consolidated into vertical storage unit for trays and cookie sheets. But you can use drawers of this size as bins, esp if they pull out a long way. My bin drawer holds plastic storage stuff--when it's full, I begin tossing. Intentionally designed it to stop hoarding. If you had lots and lots of potholders or something, you could put them in such a drawer also.

I wish I could find the original inspiration photo which sadly I did not see until my cabs were planned...but I've tried to describe it many times regarding siting the vertical storage unit next to the lazy susan corner unit.

If you make a single door -- possibly jointed--that covers both the one side of the susan access and the adjacent narrow cupboard door, you can cut back the back-to-front interior divider between the vert storage and the lazy susan unit. It doesn't even have to be made of wood--wire would do. This allows you to reach farther back into the crevice behind the lazy susan and to see items located deeper on the susan shelves. If the divider is narrower than a full dividing stile between cabs, it wins you a little more room for the storage unit and/or for stuff to stand on the floor of the corner alongside the susan in the corner unit, like tall skinny bottles.

Jody, Christine abd florantha - thanks for the compliments on the chandelier - DH likes a pendant style more but I think the lever arm is too long with the cathedral ceiling. And the one he likes might be too "modern" even for our kitchen.

Christine - I will be heading back to more tile stores - which ones did you like best? As far as HF - we put HF on the outside of our house and they are stunning - expensive but well made!! I hope to never have to replace them!

Florantha - Good points - at one time, the knives were to the left of the DW - but the sink needed a 36 inch cabinet and messed me up a bit. With the Blanco cascade sink - the prep area is to the right - so decided to go ahead and put the cutting boards and knives to the right - I can either prep there or just cross the sink for final prep.

Small drawers crossed my mind - but was afraid they wouldn't be functional - but maybe would have been a good idea.

We were just a little shy of space to go with either the slider corner cab or the "peanut" style. If I don't like the cab, I can retro with drawers - stay tuned. I do like your idea of a single drawer - even if I can't do day 1, will consider a modification downstream.

Great suggestions and thanks! I hope others learn from my mistakes!!

    Wow a2gemini!

You really have your act together.

I was nowhere near this finished at t-3.

It must be a good feeling.

The great(and scary) feelings will start when you see your hard work and thoughts becoming a reality during the construction process.

The awesome feeling will come when it is all over and you are enjoying the benefits of your hard work.

Looking forward to seeing it all come together.

    Good luck!

Not to be snotty or rude (I've had a really bad day so I'm trying to be extra nice), but you will end up prepping between your water source and your cooking surface regardless of what your sink says. I speak from experience. :)

A2--I went to the design center in troy and hit Ann sacks, beaver, cercan, and Virginia all at once! We chose Sonoma tile from Virginia. I think they also all have stores in Farmington hills.

I am in hardware hell right now. Can't decide, ordered some samples! Hope I can ,are this last decision soon!

Jamrock - I don't feel all that ready - although I started packing up the kitchen. A friend loaned me china containers and some plastic crates. I packed quite a bit and some elf keeps visiting at night and refilling the cabinets. Ahhhh!!!!

Breezy - I am sure you are right - but not too far away and I can always move a few things around.

Christine - I hope to visit the design center, but for us workerbees - it is hard as only open weekdays. I will check Virginia Tile in Farmington for sure. I just ordered samples from a California store (and also have samples from Anchor Bay, GlassTile, etc) - but nothing hitting home yet. I am hopeful that the California source will be just right!
Hardware will be next!! Let me know your decision. Right now, I am leaning toward Baldwin.

Also - I forgot to mention - the small cabinet to the right of the sink has shelves vs just slots - I looked at both options. Maybe I should have gone with the small drawers - but we all learn ex-post-facto!

Thanks for all of your help. Just wish I found this site earlier.
