Patterned glass prices -- ouch!

I would like some glass at the top of one wall of cabinets: 8 panes that are 12 x13 inches, and then 4 glass doors on the built in hutch: about 9 x 30 inches. My cabinetmaker's office manager called and asked if I was sitting down . . . . it ranged 650 to > 1000.00 for seeded or other simple decorative glass! They are not upcharging me on the glass, just what they have to pay for it.

She called another source that only has plain glass -- it is $100.00 for the same amount. I'm going to call around for some other sources, but has this been the experience for others as well? Patterned glass can help blow the budget?

I went to an art glass store here and they have an architectural glass section with a variety of prices. I just brought in my empty doors, pick out the glass I wanted from TOO MANY choices and they measured and cut it for me. They wrapped it and I took it home. My cabinetmaker installed it for me. The patterns ranged a lot in price. That is a lot of glass you are getting. I would go in and see what a stained glass, art glass store/supplier in your area has to buy direct just in case.

It depends upon who the manufacturer is and what the manufacturing process is that makes it look "antique". If it is genuine hand blown seeded glass it will be expensive, if it is a machine produced glass, you may be able to get away for less. In a kitchen I designed recently where a glass doored hutch was a "must" for the HO, that one cabinet (Finishing the interior, muntins on the doors, and the glass) added *30%* to the entire cabinet order for the kitchen.

Ask them if they have any other suppliers (or find a separate glass supplier)-- if they have other samples you can look at. They may have priced exactly what you said at top-of-the-line, and there may be other options readily available.

We have seeded glass in our butler pantry and I don't remember getting a a big upcharge (our GC would have told us if it was alot more.) However, we only have 2 doors with the glass and you have more. (And it did cost more than plain glass.)

The cabinet maker made the doors with the mullions; the glass came from a nearby glass and window shop and was cut to size at the shop.

We did the same thing with 2 doors in our pre-reno kitchen; measured and had the glass cut ourselves and then installed it with clear caulk.

Check around your area and see if you can find anything under "glass and mirrors." Visit them with your (exact) dimensions and see what they would charge. They may be able to offer glass at a variety of price points (textured vs. obscure vs. seeded, for example.)

Prices tend to be higher here where I live. My two corner cabinets (which go up to the ceiling) with seeded glass, including the installation onto the doors, cost about $150.00.
I did look around because the corners were rounded and it complicated ordering online. It was suggested to me to look for a stained glass shop, and this was where I ended up finding and experienced person to cut the glass.

Palimpset is correct in that handblown seedy is waaay more expensive than machine rolled seedy. What I also notice is that you have an unusual size with the 9 by 30 pieces. That makes it more challenging to cut. And many of the clear textured glasses are close to that in size in one direction, thus limiting your possible choices. I definitely recommend going to a stained glass shop versus a mirror/glass/window shop for the variety of glass available to you to choose from.

Have you checked out the options at Bendheim Cabinet Glass? They have tons of different patterns and colors for reasonable prices. They ship quickly and pack the glass very well. Great customer service, too.

We have Clear Coral in a couple of uppers and Clear Soft Wave in our wine & liquor hutch.

I got samples from Bendheim, which was great and helped me actually see what the textures would look like. When I priced out the actual pieces I needed (which were oversized like the OP) it was MUCH less at the glass art supply store.

By the way rjr220, my hutch area is a 42 inch cabinet so my glass is 11x39. I don't think yours is toooooo tall at all :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH! The Bendheim site is marvelous -- I think I can get what I need/want for about 1/2 of what was quoted -- including shipping.

You guys are so wonderful! And faleash, my next step is doing a search for your kitchen. Are you on FKB?

Tee hee! I've been too hesitant to post many pics since I don't have the lovely GW favorites. Have no marble, no soapstone, no painted white cabs!

faleash -- don't be shy, please. I need you help, you've been thru the hutch crunch. Please share. I've seen your garbage already, BTW . . . . (on another current thread)
