looking for paint expert

I need expert advice. We have a contract with painter to paint new house interior, all cabs & woodwork. Bid was 27,500. all inclusive. This is a construction loan so dispersed based on % of completion. He has received about 80 % of funds and done 50 % of work as the bank kinda did a misread on what was actually finished. So now he doesn't want to finish. Says its not enough to finish, he under bid it to get job etc.

It looks like we may need to finish ourselves. This is what I need to know.

He has sanded, taped , prepped , etc. He has sprayed 2 coats of primer. He has shot 1 coat of final ( Miller's Manor Hall). So I don't like The Manor Hall. Seems very thin etc.

What can I use now? I wanted the Cabinet Coat but it is not available here. SW is very accessible to me. What product in their line would work for extensive cabinetry, wainscot & mill work?

Also after 1st coat of final do we sand again?

This whole situation is a mess but I need to figure out how to go from here and get the best results.

He has only done this upstairs, the downstairs has not been started yet.

Paint experts please help if you can. TIA

Kimberly

Kim, there are some VERY knowledgeable paint guys here, but this board tends to be slow. Copy & Paste your question over on Decorating or even Kitchens.......those boards get a lot of traffic.

I cannot believe that this is happening. That seems like an incredible amount of money not to have the whole thing done. And he is the one who did the bid. He needs to have calculated everything and he needs to finish. I know that the Satin Impervo from SW is a favorite of the pros over here for cabinets/trim. But I have no real knowledge of what you need, I just need you not to be stuck!

P.s. Maybe re-name your post too.......
Something like......Painter was Paid and Won't Finish. What to do?

    Red -
Thank you , I will post cross for sure . Must say that this is just a small portion of the horrible things that have gone on. We have many attorneys involved now. All started because of terrible GC. Big builder in town, totally absentee from project, didn't provide subs, quality control, guidance, supervision. He now put a lien on house as he wants us to sign new contract holding him harmless in everything. Extortion for sure and a 3 year heartache.
    Thanks again.

Use the Pro Classic for trim and cabinets.

This contractor is less than professional considering what he is doing. Don't cut corners and purchase Pro Classic, purchase the Duration. Look for an independent dealer that has a quality paint. They will tend to give you better pricing than a Sherwin Williams store. Pratt and Lambert has dealers in many areas of the country and makes a good product that is less pricey than the SW products. California Paints(actually based in Massachusetts) has dealers in the Midwest and East Coast and produces a great product for the money. You can also look to Valspar at the local Lowe's Stores for good quality product at a reasonable price.

Duration is a poor choice for trim because the dried paint film has a slightly gritty texture to it. You want trim and cabinets to be smooth like glass. If you are shopping at SW because that is accessible and that is where you want to go, then Pro Classic is what you want to buy and probably what the people inside the store would recommend to pros and homeowners alike. Maybe Super Paint is a bit more user friendly but it is also a bit cheaper and a lower grade.

I also have most every other major retailer here. So , I will say I can buy whatever. I just want it to be right. We have a TON of painting to do. I want the woodwork to be smooth as glass for sure. If I am missing out here and could get something from somewhere else let me know.

Like I said, Cabinet Coat isn't at my local Ace store. Not only that they were very rude when I asked if they could order it. I wish that wasn't the case as it does seem that might be the best thing.

Now to you paint experts. Do we sand again. Remember he has shot one coat of final.

Thanks for all the help already.

P.S. Painter texted me yesterday and said
" I know you don't owe me, but if you could just loan me 2,000. or 3,000. thousand, I know I would show up on Tuesday and get this done"

    Is he serious?

    Good L*RD...

We've had Cabinet-Coat at our ACE for YEARS!!
I'd like to knock some heads at that ACE store!!

I've posted the SKU #'s on previous posts here. If they ordered it through their normal ACE freight, it comes to the store "freight-free". They would just have to set up the UPC, SKU #, & Price in their store computers.

Separately, did your ACE have the new ACE cabinet, Door & Trim paint?? They designed it to be a 50-state VOC-legal Cabinet-Coat alternative. Plus, it's easily tintable to 98% of ACE's colors.

    >>> If the existing sprayed coat looks nice & smooth, no need to sand.

This painter...wow...I'd be very leery of this last "offer".

His last offer was totally ignored by me.

I am going to call Ace one more time. The color I have is from SW, I am assuming I can still use the same color?
    Another dumb question....
.... can Cabinet coat be used for all trim, wainscot, woodwork, besides cabinetry?

    Thanks so much.

Don't be afraid of Manor Hall paint. I'm assuming it is made by PPG and is the same Manor Hall available her in California. I used it on my last house and the paint is expensive, but incredible. It goes on well and is when cured is incredible, especially the semi-gloss. Mine did take at least two months to cure, however.

If your paint is thin the painter may have thinned it in order to spray.

    jeff8407-
I just called my dealer and they confirmed that it is made by PPG. It makes me feel a little better knowing you had good experience with it. I have 15 gallons of it in a custom color so would really like to not switch. However would switch if the paint was not a good choice, and I would have to repaint later anyway.
    Thanks for you review.

Faron- I agree about knocking heads. I DO NOT understand poor customer service, especially with the way things are economically right now.
Hopefully, I can sick with Manor Hall as I have so much of it already purchased.

Everyone Else- thanks as usual for all your help and expertise.
