Master bedroom update/progress! Help picking wallpaper! PICS!

13 years ago

Hello! Some of you were recently helping me make decisions on my master bedroom. I have made some progress but wanted opinions/votes on wallpaper accents.

I just started painting our bedroom BM Palladian Blue...in love with this color!!! Here is a view of one of the walls I painted with my bedposts for contrast.

{{gwi:1608446}}

{{gwi:1608447}}

Some of you might recall that I was wanting to use some type of toile pattern in the room. At first I was thinking about getting toile bedding/curtains. Now I have made the decision that I want to get solid color creamy white linens for the bed and creamy white window panels. Instead, I am strongly considering introducing pattern with wallpaper for the wall behind my bed. I had started painting the edges of the wall with palladian blue but while painting got the idea that wallpaper might give some visual interest to the room on this wall..

{{gwi:1608448}}

I picked up a wallpaper book today...all these patterns have the same exact "aqua" color as the palladian blue; just different variations..

CHOICE 1 aqua background with off white pattern

{{gwi:1608449}}

{{gwi:1608450}}

Not in love with the actual pattern but the colors do work.

CHOICE 2 chocolate brown background with aqua pattern

{{gwi:1608451}}

{{gwi:1608452}}

This would by least favorite of the choices because I think there would be too much contrast with the brown background. I am really looking for a more subtle play on colors. Also I have enough of dark brown in the room with the wood tones of my furniture. However, still including this as an option because the colors do work.

CHOICE 3 aqua background with brownish gold bird toile

{{gwi:1608453}}

{{gwi:1608455}}

This is the pattern that hubs and I are leaning towards the most. The background has an almost "distressed washed out" effect of the aqua but yet matches the palladium blue so well. The toile is in a brownish gold that compliments the SW Whole Wheat in my hallway. I also like the free flowing style of toile (as opposed to a tight uniform pattern).

CHOICE 4 aqua background with darker aqua pattern...tone on tone

{{gwi:1608457}}

{{gwi:1608460}}

This one also looks nice with the tone on tone. The background is lighter than the palladium blue but the pattern printed on it matches the palladium blue. Would be a very subtle tone on tone. I would like it better if the pattern were a toile, but the tone on tone colors look nice.

Also, please note that for now the creamy color carpet is staying but the long term plan is to put in wood flooring. Hubby also planning on installing crown moulding.

Opinions???

    They are all nice. I understand why the third one is your fav- I like it, too. A great mix of blue and brown, and nice movement in the paper.

    The only thing I will say about that paper, given your plan to use creamy white plain bedding and no other pattern in the room, is that the wallpaper wall will be come the focus of the room. That is fine, but just be sure that is the goal.

    I could see the Heritage comforter set from JC Penney working with that paper (assuming the color works). heritage set

    Otherwise, with the plain creamy white bedding, drapery, and beige carpeting, I would probably choose the first damask pattern, off white on aqua.

    I really like the bird paper, it is different. I agree with Les though that figuring out bedding might be a little harder with that one.

    Good luck, you are making a great start!

    I agree w/ Les about the bedding and #3. My initial thought was the 1st or last because of the off white bedding. I like your choices - it will be very pretty!

    I think the one with the bird is beautiful and its very special, the brown would play nicely with your bed. But if that first ones blue is the same as your paint it would be so beautifully serene, and perfect for a master bedroom. I would prefer the same color background so its a better blend with the rest of your painted walls, rather than introducing a white background and blue design, too much contrast with the walls, JMHO. The blue backgrounds in either choice would make your white linens a nice contrast. I think your choices are fabulous. Im becoming drawn to these same colors plus gray lately. Will love seeing the room finished.

    I adore wallpaper in a bedroom! Not many people have done that in years and I'm glad you have the guts to color outside the line.

    It's probably just me, but I would add a bit more "pop" to the wallpaper. While I like the patterns you chose, I think the paper will just fade into the background and not be noticeable.

    Will you have any accent colors other than white?

    Oh, wow, these are all fabulous wallpapers! I love the bird one, but maybe matching the pattern in hanging will be more challenging? I really like #4, too. That is my second favorite.

    The Palladian Blue is perfect in your space.

    Thanks for the feedback!

    ACK!!! I didn't think the bedding would pose a problem! les917 - that is a really pretty bedding set and the walls look exactly like PB! I really have my mind set on solid color bedding though... I have been spending a ton of time on a site called Layla Grace (link to site is below). I am mostly looking at the bedding by Bella Notte on that site. All of their items (duvets, dust ruffles, pillows, coverlets, curtain panel etc.) are available in lots of colors. I am very drawn to the Whisper Linen Duvet cover. Unsure about what colors to go with...I was thinking of going with the Champagne color for dust ruffle and duvet and maybe doing pillow shams with a burst of color - the colors that I think would look good in this room are maybe Seaglass, Ocean, or Ginger. The possibilities are endless - different pieces can be layered with different colors - but I did just want to use color as accents in pillows - I wanted the primary color to be creamy white (like the champagne).

    Here is the color pallette to choose from:
    {{gwi:1608461}}

    And here are pics I swiped from the site...

    This one features the Ginger color for the duvet and sham but also has what looks like champagne and white coverlet:
    {{gwi:1608463}}

    This one is all white but looks like maybe fawn throw on top:
    {{gwi:1608465}}

    This one has Seaglass color and Cypress:
    {{gwi:1608467}}

    The pieces are pricey - so I have not worked out exactly which pieces in which colors that I would order, but in my mind I was envisioning layers of white/cream and using a punch of color in a sham. Thoughts? I make myself nutso with this stuff!!

    What a difficult choice. They are all really beautiful.

    I think my 1st choice is #1. With that one, I agree with your white/cream bedding. And then maybe some pillows in the brown color.

    A very close 2nd choice is #3 (your favorite). With that one I think I would do the ginger color duvet, folded at end of bed, with white/cream coverlet/blanket over the bed. On my monitor it looks like ginger is close to the brown in the wallpaper? In both cases, the white/cream curtains would be perfect.

    I love the direction you are heading. The Palladium Blue looks beautiful with your furniture and the hallway color. Great choice!

    Ahh! Thanks so much everyone for your support and feedback! This room has been a lot of trial and error for me and it feels good to know I am at least making progress and on the right track!

    Upon closer examination of choice 1 that most of you seem to like best - the background matches the palladian blue almost perfectly - the pattern is not really white like I originally posted, it is more like a very pale aqua color - like an "off-white aqua" LOL :) But at first glance it does seem like an off white almost, if that makes any sense. It is definitely very pretty and elegant with being "overdone" or too fancy. Definitely still considering this one.

    I am still favoring the bird one though because of a few reasons:

    1) I really wanted toile and like the "movement of the design" like les917 said. The pattern just looks more random, rather than uniform. I love toile!

    2) I like how the brownish pattern of the birds and flowers looks with the dark furniture in my room. We have 2 nice sized dressers in the room along with nightstands, and the rice carved poster bed - all in the cherry wood (the stain is more like a walnut stain) - so I do think the brownish pattern coordinates nicely with the furniture.

    3) I like what jillinnj suggested about using something like the ginger color duvet folded at bottom of bed along with white/cream coverlets. I do agree that the ginger looks very much like the brown in the bird toile wallpaper.

    4) I just like it!!! :) haha

    I like them all and think you will really enjoy seeing some pattern on the wall.

    I am a paper hangar. Just so you know, type of pattern does not usually have anything to do with matching the seams properly. I say usually, because there are certain designs where it is very difficult to find the actual matching point.

    You are not considering the kinds of patterns where the match is hard to identify. Even if you were, assuming you will be hiring a pro, the work of finding a match point is not your problem.

    I recommend that you get some ceiling paint and make sure that it overlaps the wall by at least 1/4 inch. You don't want to see any of the blue peeking out above the top edge of the wallpaper.

    I can't wait to see the finished pics of your room!

    I love choice #3. It's gorgeous! The Palladian Blue is so pretty with your white trim and the wood tones in your furniture will bring out the browns in the bird print wallpaper. Please post pictures when you finish!

    I have the Bella Notte bedding in champagne which I use in the summer. My walls are gray wisp and the champagne is a perfect color in that it's not white and not cream but a perfect ivory color. I love the first wallpaper and the bird pattern. Several months ago I was looking at some Farrow and Ball wallpaper for my headboard wall too. The more I thought about it I was afraid to commit to such an expensive wallpaper in case I wanted to change my bedding from all cream to something else. I also was afraid I might want to change my paint color and having the wallpaper would make it expensive to do. The Bella Notte bedding is really nice. I just love to change out my bedding often. Love your wall color!

    Cindyloo123 - Thx for all the info! Hubs and I will be hanging the paper ourselves - we have done it before in our last house. This is such a small wall area - 8 foot high by 12 foot wide. (Remember my room is L shaped, and in the other part of the room - the sitting area - there is a wall with a large window on it - I might put the pattern on that wall around the window too just to give balance to the room. Hubby is also going to put up crown moulding in this room so that will cover-up that small area where wall meets ceiling.

    sis2two - I can't believe you have the Bella Notte bedding! That is so good to know - and I remember you posting in one my last threads about this room how you had the Gray Wisp and that was actually what began my inspiration towards using blue in this room. Up until that point I had not really considered it because I was so afraid of it not flowing with rest of house! Do you have other pieces of the Bella Notte bedding beside the duvet? Also, to do just one wall can be pretty affordable depending on the size of the wall. Wallpapering a whole room could be super expensive, but just doing one wall as an accent isn't so bad. I agree though, if it is something you think you will get tired of after a few years, it is harder to remove - re-painting is definitely easier.

    Back in my last house (about 12 years ago) I did the same type of thing in our bedroom and I did not analyze it like I am now!! We were brand new homeowners and I had no knowledge of decorating. I picked a blue gray color at Sherwin Williams right off the chip and we loved it - there was no agonizing over color like I do now. On a whim, I bought a few rolls of wallpaper from a clearance bin at the Sherwin Williams store - it was an English Cottage kind of print - striped with flowers inside each stripe - It had NO blue in it, but it looked amazing with the blue-gray paint anyways, and I bought solid ivory colored bedding - all with the same exact furniture that was brand new at the time. The room was gorgeous and my fave place to be. Eventually after about 5 years or so, I was ready for a change and so we took the paper down and re-painted.

    So funny how now I agonize and analyze and second-guess about these decisions, when back then I literally threw it all together and loved it!!

    I think that your reason #4 tells you what you should do!

    You love it, go for it!

    Forgot to say in my last post - a big huge YES to the crown molding. It's going to be classic and beautiful! Cannot wait to see finished pictures.

    All of those wallpapers are simply gorgeous. Very elegant. My first choice would be #3.

    My room is also Palladian blue and I just love it. I also painted my ceiling Palladian blue and put up crown molding. The ceiling is BM Ultra flat and the wall are Matte. I'm going to look at the bedding site you linked to. I'm having a terrible time deciding on that.

    Do post pics when you are done.

    Love love love #3. I think it will look stunning with the linens you like, since the linens have so much texture and depth of color. I agree that the Champagne, Ginger, and Seaglass are all lovely colors and I think it will really be some kind of wonderful when you are done. Serene and peaceful. I can't wait to see it!

    My choice would be #1, but I also like #3 and #4. I see the brown tie between your wood furniture and those warmer tones, but you mentioned white bedding so #1 seemed like a perfect fit. If you go to an ivory/champagne color, #3 will work better. My room has a lot of dark wood, white and crystal, so the first one would work better with what I have and is probably another reason I was drawn to it.

    I would install your crown first and then cut the paper to it rather than leaving paper under the crown -- which would work fine now, but be a pain when you decide its time for a change.

    nutmegxo- I have the embroidered coverlet and a duvet cover whiched I alternate using for my main covering and the euro shams also in the embroidered pattern. My dust ruffle is the satin in champagne, but I will honestly tell you, I did not like the way the dust ruffles are attached. They are attached by a strange type of straight pin which were very difficult to attach. Not only that but the part that was attached to the box spring, tore in several places. The dust ruffles themselves are beautiful, but they way they are attached is not a good idea. Even velcrow would be better. The wallpaper that I was looking at was F&B and the minimum order is 3 rolls, making the price around 900.00. Way too much for one wall! I love yours and may start looking again. It really does make a statement! I love the direction you are going and the color is great!

    I promise to post pics after the painting and papering is finished!! It will be a few months or so before bedding and curtains are up.

    I'm drooling over choice #3--love, love it! Agree w/ all your reasons for choosing it *and* it goes beautifully w/ your carpet, too (just to give you another reason to get it!)

    Would you mind sharing the mfr/pattern of that bird toile?

    Oh, and the Palladian blue does look beautiful, also.

    Can't wait to see the finished product...

    jbrig - thx so much!! :) The manufacturer of the wallpaper is Sandpiper Studios and all the pattern choices that I posted above are in their "Richmond Estates" book. The bird toile pattern that I chose is called "Virginia Toile" ... it came in several colors; the one that I chose is Bay Blue.

    Here is a swatch of it:

    I am absolutely thrilled with the Palladian Blue! Beautiful color!

    Thanks, nutmegxo. I was hoping they would have a lavender/purple-toned option, and they do :-) Buuut, from an online description I saw, sounds like it might not have any brown/beige portions. I was hoping to tie in my woodwork and carpet that way in my Master BR. I sent off for a sample; we'll just have to wait and see.

    Did you buy your paper online or locally? So far, looks like Steve's Wallpaper and Blinds has the best price online...?

    jbrig - I ordered the paper from my local Sherwin Williams store... they had many books to look through and I found it easier to search there, than to search online (where colors don't always read well on computer). Plus I had a coupon for 10% off. I must have looked through over a dozen books in the store!! (Originally I had went to Lowe's but was very disappointed with the selection there - they only had a handful of books to look through and nothing interested me.)

    I did see the purple option in the wallpaper book! I have already returned the book to the store, otherwise I would have taken a pic of it for you. From what I remember it was a creamy colored background with the pattern being in a purple. There was another option that was brownish and another option that was tone on tone creamy beige.

    As much as I have frequented the SW store in our town in the past few years (they greet me by 1st name when I walk in, LOL), I totally forgot they had wallpaper books. I will def. go check to see if they have that book at my store.

    Thanks!

    Oh trust me, my SW store knows me by name as well! I don't know if that is a good thing or bad thing! LOL They must think I live in a mansion for all the times I have bought paint/supplies. :)
