Bathroom - help w/ paint direction please

14 years ago

Hi Guys! I was going to surprise with the bathroom but I'm having problems picking out paint. I'm most likely using SW Dromedary Camel for my bedroom and I love the gold with these fabrics but it doesn't work with the gray floor. None of the warm paint samples I own are working.

Here's the new shower curtain and valance that I'm happy with. Nanny2a made the shower curtain.

IRL you can actually see the houndstooth. See how the gold isn't working?

{{!gwi}}

I've totally been ignoring the floor because I don't like it but you can only ignore so much. The floral fabric has lots of colors in it which is good. What about BM Sage Mountain or BM Cypress Green?

{{!gwi}}

Sage M. left and Cypress on right -colors touching the fabric.

{{!gwi}}

Sage M. is the bottom and Cypress top -the colors touching the fabric.

{{!gwi}}

Close up of floral fabric.

{{!gwi}}

Just looking at the chips, I think I like Sage Mountain better. When I showed DH that's the one he immediately pointed to.

I prefer warm colors and don't want this room to read cold when I'm done so I'm hoping to pull that off. Am I headed in the right direction? I don't have fast access to get paint samples like I used to so I'd like to have a narrowed down selection so I can get the samples all at once.

Thanks!

Note -Towels and rug can change.

    Fun! I think something in the red family is heading in the right direction, maybe more of a melon like loribee suggested.
    But Graywings has a point- watch the wall color if this is your main mirror for makeup!

  • 14 years ago

    Graywings - We must have posted at the same time and I missed your post! Yes, this is my makeup mirror and my wheels were turning there.

    If I could find an antique white that I thought looked good....

    Cooper - I can't do melon. If I'm going to go real bold it's going to have to be a color I really like and melons kind of scare me for paint, lol.

    I'll have to look some more but deep down I really just want to use my gold and red accents. Gold seems to be my staple paint color.

    I actually like the Natural Linen. Take a picture of it, though next to the shower curtain. I think the RT is too saturated. My other suggestion was more similar to loribee's melon color. Also, what type of light bulbs are you using in your bathroom? If they are fluorescent, make sure the bulbs are a warm white, and not cool. I've found that makes a huge difference in how colors are perceived.

    I know this sounds like a big deal, but really you should be able to replace the bathroom counter pretty reasonably priced. Home Depot, Home Expo Lowes all carry standard sized granite counter tops with cut outs for the sink and the faucet--and then you do not have to go to the expense of fabrication. I would really consider it. Your white/gray countertop would look stunning in cool gray/blue with nickel accents, but that is not your look and does not go with your MBR, so you will always be fighting with it.

  • 14 years ago

    Ack, don't know what happened with my last post, sorry.

    I'll have to check on the bulbs. They're fluorescent 100W ea. in the light bar. Ye-ah bright. Angels sing when I turn those babies on.

    For the countertop, we'd still need the sinks and someone to install. It's just not going to happen at this point even though I'm sure it sounds worse that what it is. With things that changed for us recently and looking towards future things, there's money left to paint the rooms and get curtains for the bedroom. I did spray paint the chrome lights and like them much better. Here's what they look like now.
    {{!gwi}}

    As for knobs, I don't know what I'm doing there yet. I thought of antique bronze which wouldn't really stand out. I also thought about white. My curtain rod is antique brass but I might spray paint that bronze also. My bathroom fixtures will probably never all match and that's ok with me.

    Here's the BM Natural Linen again.
    {{!gwi}}
    {{!gwi}}

    I also have SW Kilim Beige. Looks a little warmer. I am concerned about getting a band aid look with this, although lots of people here that have used it say not.
    {{!gwi}}

    Here's both together.
    Kilim top, NL bottom
    {{!gwi}}
    {{!gwi}}

    Kilim left, NL right
    {{!gwi}}

    I might as well rule the red out. If I'm trying to "convince" myself then it's going to be too much for me.

    Melon makes me think of bright and pink/orange colors.

  • 14 years ago

    I like the Kilim best...Take out your red towels....IMHO they clash with the beautiful fringe on your shower curtain/winder treatment. Bye the way, my bathroom is configured just like yours....same tile on the floor, same white marble-like countertop, same oak vanity. I do have white tile half way up the wall and glass shower doors. Right now I have everything white with beige rugs and beige sheers on the window....clean looking but not exciting. What would a pretty darkish brown look like on your walls?

  • 14 years ago

    What about putting beadboard up....maybe 36'' from floor, then using one of the reds above it. It is very reasonable in $$, and the red would be gorgeous but not too overpowering! You could do the beadboard in either white, like trim, or use one of the beige colors you were looking at.

  • 14 years ago

    The red towels match very well IRL. I also have these green towels but I guess I should really just worry about finding paint for now. :)

    I do have a few browns. On the same strip as SW Kilim is Hopsack.

    Kilim and Natural Linen are just giving me an ok feeling. Not really feeling the browns either.

    Bama - My sister mentioned that same idea earlier and because it sounded like a lot of work I quickly dismissed it. Thinking again, that could work. Could I just add a chair rail and skip the beadboard? Chair rail and below, same color as trim (white). I do have that awesome leftover beadboard wallpaper and I know I could do that myself. I have some bb oak paneling from my island but it's not enough. Since DH and I are the only two that use this bathroom, I think the wallpaper would be safe from dings. Wonder how well it will hold up with steam?

    Of course I did a mock up. Top of the tap is 36".
    {{!gwi}}
    {{!gwi}}
    It would fall right below the top of the countertop.
    {{!gwi}}

    Justgotabeme...if you're feeling like a mock up, I'd love to see the red and chair rail/bb.

  • 14 years ago

    I wouldn't do a chair rail in there. You have a limited amount of wall space as it is - chopping it up doesn't make sense.

    I wouldn't worry about applying makeup. Our upstairs bath is a dark moss green, and it has never been a problem. If the lighting on the mirror is good (and it sounds like there is plenty, LOL) that is what you will be seeing, not the red or green or brown walls.

  • 14 years ago

    Les - I've seen quite a few smaller powder room areas done with a chair rail but the layout is different. What do you think of the red colors in general shown above?

    Our other bathroom is dark green and the few times I had to put makeup on in there I was fine. Lighting is good and I could see that I was blending.

  • 14 years ago

    I do like the idea of red. I think the red of your towels is the one I would try to match. It seems to have a bit more orange/brown undertone, and I think that will work nicely with all the brown tones in your fabrics.

    Of course then you might have to abandon the red towels for the bath, or they will disappear into the walls. LOL

    Raspberry Truffle is a luscious color, and those who have used it have wonderful rooms, but I think it might have a bit too much pink undertone in your space.

    In the end, tho, it is about what YOU feel works in the space. Color in real life can feel very different than it does in a pix.

    Got a JC Penney flyer in the mail today, and it seems they have a lot of sales and coupons going on either starting tomorrow, or starting Wednesday. If you are interested in the rug, you might want to take advantage of that.

  • 14 years ago

    I love red, have it in my master. I think it would look nice in there, but my fav is the Kilim brown strip. What about the Latte on that strip? Hopsack is too dark, Kilim is too light, I don't personally care for the Linen at all - too blah for me. I have the Kilim in the stairway that goes down to my basement and the next color up on my downstairs bath; at least I think it is that one - it's either the 2nd or 3rd color from that strip. How do the paint colors you've chosen for the bath look with your color choice for the master? I would want good flow, so don't leave your bedroom color out of consideration when choosing a color. Don't have to be on the same strip, but you want them to mesh well.

  • 14 years ago

    Okay here you go. I used the virtual with the gold wall since you mentioned that's your comfort zone. I removed the towels at first to make it easier, but think I like it better without the them below the window. Have you thought about moving the rod to over the toilet?

  • 14 years ago

    I really like that last mockup, could you do another one with the red on top?
    Shee, for the sake of an inch or less you could just line up the chair rail with the top of the vanity countertop.

  • 14 years ago

    My vote is for the beadboard on the bottom which gives you many more options for the top. I agree to line up the beadboard with the vanity top.

    Also, I would recommend switching over to towel hooks to hang your towels. Put the hooks above the beadboard, though, one to either side below window. Your present bar looks cramped. A good quality towel hook (mine are from Restoration Hardware) works much better.

  • 14 years ago

    I have what may be the same exact flooring & it's driving me nuts too. Thankfully I don't have much; just the kids bathroom & laundry room. I decided that I was going to pull the floor out; I found decent 12 inch flooring at Lowes or depot that would probably work in your bathroom which would also allow you to leave the counter top because there is some gray in it. Below are 3 that I have; taken with the cell; colors are off some; the tan is not showing correctly

  • 14 years ago

    Les -IRL those towels are a tad light version but have the same tone as the red pillow sham. Looking at the fan deck, a lot of reds could work. I think I'll get a sample of Moroccan Red. I like some of the other colors on that same strip. Maybe even Poppy, though it appears a big brighter.
    Here are some more red shots.

    {{!gwi}}

    {{!gwi}}

    Thanks for the mock up, Justgotabeme! I'd love to see that in red or maybe even without the beadboard on the bottom and just white. I'm a little worried about the chopped up effect now with the vanity in there. Most times I've only ever seen this done in a powder room.

    I emailed Graham & Brown about the bb paper in the bathroom and they said to do a test because they can't guarantee with steam it would be a great thing. I can't add the paneling myself. Could I just leave the bottom part of the wall white paint or would that just look weird? (Deep down I know the answer to that) We do have to have trim installed in the basement yet so I could probably have the bb done at the same time but it's not high on the priority list so I don't know what it would even happen. (read that as I'm super excited to paint this room because I'm a mascara water slop at the sink and the white flat paint is less than pretty right now.)

    Ctlane -If I go w/ a chair rail I was thinking also it would be better to make it flush with the countertop.

    Justgotabeme & Val - I thought of hanging towels on hooks from the door but that could get on my nerves because the closet is to the left when you walk in, right behind the main door when open. I'm not sure what I think of towels above the toilet. I'm short so I'd have to check the heights out. I like the idea of hooks where the towel bar is now. That would be super easy for DH! :) I agree the bar is too short.

  • 14 years ago

    I like the Moroccan Red a lot, at least in the small swatch.

    I think white beadboard can be a great look, but I don't see it fitting in with your decor style. I also don't see it working to create the warm, menswear-inspired look you have going on in the bedroom and here in the bath.

    I think the towel bar is too short - it should be about the same width, just a little inside, the width of the window if you are going to keep it there. But I wonder if you have a small amount of wall space between the other end of the shower and the closet behind the door? That would be a perfect place for a towel hook, and convenient to reach for when in the shower. You could do one hook there, meaning you could hang the towels on a rod behind the door then transfer one to the hook when showering, or keep them in the closet if you are one to use a fresh towel for every shower and then put it on the hook.

    Or, you could stack one hook over another on that small wall space.

    I would not put bath towels over the toilet. Too inconvenient. You would want a small hook on the right side of the vanity for one hand towel, tho.

  • 14 years ago

    Rose - Thanks for thinking of me with the flooring but I know DH won't be down with that at this point.

    Les - "I also don't see it working to create the warm, menswear-inspired look you have going on in the bedroom and here in the bath."
    Very good point. I don't want the bathroom to read cottagey.

    There is a bit of wall space on the other side of the shower. I figured it would be easier to just take a pic.
    {{!gwi}}

    Regarding the towels, I've always put mine along side the tub before showering. I questioned DH and turns out he grabs it off the bar. He looked at me as though I was odd and barbaric using the floor, LOL.

    I'll get some samples probably mid week so stay tuned. I'm still not sure I can handle a red room but I'm not loving the other colors. I'll make huge samples and tape them together.

  • 14 years ago

    What about using the original color; then focus on doing the molding? It may be easier to do if the molding wasn't white.

  • 14 years ago

    Rose - I'm a little confused. Are you talking about keeping the paint color and changing the trim color?

  • 14 years ago

    Sorry; the SW Dromedary Camel; then see about changing the molding color to something that will tie the rest (floor/counter) in.

  • 14 years ago

    Shee, I'm attaching your previous thread when you first began your search for all your beautiful fabrics. Onecatonedog has the King's Muir in her kitchen with Blonde walls I believe. I know she posted the answer somewhere. Also look at it paired with her beautiful red sofa.

    Here is a link that might be useful: and so it began...

  • 14 years ago

    Well, I searched again and her paint is LA Pale Gold 2. She says it's very similar to Ivoire. Go to lowes and look at the LA line and look at all the gold's. I have LA Gold 2 and 3 in my home. Again, very similar to the Ivoire, blonde etc strip. Personally, I would ignore the floor and put down a pretty rug.

  • 14 years ago

    Did you order the winter wheat paint? How would that look for the trim if you used SW Dromedary Camel on the walls?

    Kmcg, was going to email you but you don't have that option on your profile- question; can you look at the fabric in this post the Sarah Richardson hotel room- have you seen it before? So as not to throw this thread off track; you can reply in the other post. Thank you.. you're really good at fabric from reading the post you linked to.

  • 14 years ago

    I do not think it would look weird to have a chair rail with no beadboard below. I have that in my powder room and I think it would look fine in your bathroom too.

    I have Moroccan Red in my living room above chair rail with BM Vanilla Ice Cream below. Here are a couple pictures. I love the color. I've posted this picture a couple times recently. Sorry for the repeat, but thought it might help since it is the color you are looking at. These pictures were taken for someone that asked about the windows not being painted, so they don't show too much of the wall. If you want pics of more wall, I can do that tomorrow during the day.

  • 14 years ago

    Maybe it's totally out of the running by now, but I really liked the Lenox.

  • 14 years ago

    Let's talk about a rug for a min. What size? The length of the room is 8'4". The width of the tape you see in the pic is 2'4", tape length is 7". Would I want a runner in those dimensions?
    {{!gwi}}

    Kmcg - I have the cards of LA gold 3 and 4 but not 2. They're not as rich but all golds seem to look nice with the fabric. Eddie Bauer Bungalow gold also looks nice. It's a little deeper/richer than the Dromedary Camel. Are you thinking the lighter golds would work better than the Drom. Camel?
    In my old thread Onecatonedog said,
    "The red is more of a lighter rosy red deepening all the way to a burgundy, but not a real orange type of red. Though, I have a sample of it on the brick-ish red blanket on my bed right now and it looks great there."
    That holds very true.

    Rose - No, I never ordered the sample. I figured there were lots other paint colors I could go though first. It looks like a really pretty color. All the trim and doors in my house are painted the same plain white so I'm not sure if that's a no no to change it up in one room? (I didnt get to painting the white builder trim in this room yet.)

    Jill - Oh, I really love that color red and your room. I have this picture saved from seeing it recently actually but didn't know that was the color. Thank you!

    Jessica - I'll take another look at the Lenox. I found it to be a good neutral color in the past.

  • 14 years ago

    Les - Those JCP rugs, you're talking red walls and the brown rug, right? One of the reviews describes the blue as a sage/gray so that's probably a good thing. Looks like the red rug has brown also. Wish they gave a color description.
    {{!gwi}}

    I don't know that the dimensions work. Here's the 2'7" x 3'11".
    {{!gwi}}

    It fits nice by the sink but then the other side of the floor is bare.
    {{!gwi}}

    Next size up is too big.

    The runner - 2'2"' x 7'10" is pushing it for length. It's almost touching the floor vent (that vent style and or color could change if needed). There's an inch before the rug starts at the door. Also, getting ready at the mirror, I'd probably be standing on the edge of the rug.
    {{!gwi}}

    It could slide if off center a bit but I don't know what I think of that either.
    {{!gwi}}

  • 14 years ago

    Runner is too long. Get the one that sits in front of the sink so nicely - that will be the focal point of the space, and the rest of the floor won't be an issue. Plus if there are males in the house, I wouldn't want the rug running in front of the toilet!

  • 14 years ago

    I was sitting here thinking that will be a lot of brown but looking again at the pic of the rectangle one (only shown in the red/brown) a lot of it (outside area) will be the ivory color.

    Shot from both directions.
    {{!gwi}}
    {{!gwi}}

    From reading their return policy, it looks like I can return it to a store if need be. Hmm.. I'm not sure about the wall color yet but it's hard to find rugs with brown instead of black. (my vanity is dk brown btw. not sure if I mentioned that above or if you can tell from pics.)

  • 14 years ago

    Shee, I'm not sure which fabric you are referring to? The pink stripe in the hotel room? After I posted last night about LA, I thought of throwing in the ole' standby...Tobacco Road! My family room is TR. Very similar to the Drom Camel. Or it might be a contender for your MBR.
    I thought I had my email up. I know I did because I had received emails before from other poster's. Going to check it out now.

  • 14 years ago

    Well, I went to my member page to edit it. I set my email so other member's can email me and clicked save, but keep getting an error message! Don't know what's up with that! Tried several times. If and when I figure it out, I'll let you know! Stay tuned...

  • 14 years ago

    Kmcg - Oh, I'm sorry. I was talking about Kings Muir floral fabric. When reading back over Onecatonedog's description I realized she was spot on and decided to post about it randomly, lol.

    I have a sample of Tobacco Road and it looks really similar to my Shelburne Buff.

    Bottom L-R Tobacco Rd, Dromedary Camel, Decatur Buff. Top cards LA 3, Bungalow Gold, LA 4
    {{!gwi}}

    Dromedary and Decatur - Decatur looks washed out terrible in my bedroom but not in here.
    *Didn't bother to take the "chair rail" down yet.
    {{!gwi}}

  • 14 years ago

    I agree with Les about the beadboard. As much as I love beadboard, I think it's too cottage for your furnishings. Like others said though, you could do a chair rail. I, personally, think I would go with the same color of paint that is in the bedroom, then pick up reds/golds, etc. in the towels, rug, etc. I think when you have it all together the floor is not going to look bad.

    tina

  • 14 years ago

    I like the one next to the shower curtain in the last photo the best. Although I did like the moroccan red as well as some of those lighter reds ( or melon colored)

  • 14 years ago

    Will your rug interfere with the closing of the door? I use a long narrow rug in front of the sink for that reason. As mentioned above our baths are configured the same.

  • 14 years ago

    OMG, it was roselvr that asked the question. So sorry, roselvr! I'm not sure I am following your question correctly. I will look for your post now.

  • 14 years ago

    Grandmaof3 -I just checked the height and it will clear the door. I also tried a few rugs and pads out and it's good. Good thing to think of though!

    I just ordered both the brown and red rectangle rugs from JCP. I like that both have the dark brown. Says it will ship from the manufacturer and will take 2 weeks! *whine*

    I'll pick up some samples Wed. I'm hopeful for the Moroccan Red. If I use a gold, it will be Dromedary Camel and that is the color I'm set for painting the bedroom.

    My sister said to me recently (she's for the red), "Most of your paint in the house is gold. This is a small room. It's a gallon of paint if you really don't like the red down the road." I really hate the saying "it's only paint" because it's time, and money, and don't forget prep work but it is a small room. Part of me wants to branch off into the different!

    Neither the red or gold do the shower curtain any justice in the photos really. They both look better IRL. The red does pull the red out of the shower curtain body much better.

    I'm leaning towards not doing the chair rail but we'll see. The bb is out for the cottagey reason.

    Thank you everyone for your thoughts and feedback! I really do appreciate it. Stay tuned.

  • 14 years ago

    I'm glad you are stepping out of the gold box. I know that is your comfort zone, but I think the morrocan red with its lean toward rosy will look very good with all the fabrics.

  • 14 years ago

    Kmcg; I just bumped the post; explained what I'm looking for.

  • 14 years ago

    Yay! I hope the Moroccan Red works for you. I really love that color.

  • 14 years ago

    May I say....
    my friend painted her LR- Glidden "homemade butterscotch" today. I googled it and thought of you and your room. I asked her to bring me in a sample, tomorrow.

  • 14 years ago

    Lori - Actually I was looking at that color today online. Long story short, I normally use Ace Royal paint but they don't carry it anymore and I don't like the new stuff. I considered heading to another place to look at color chips. I do plan on using BM paint for the bathroom but was hoping for something decent but cheaper for the bedroom but who to match the paint...?

    So anyhow, yeah, I'd love to see a sample of the H. Butterscotch!

  • 14 years ago

    Another vote for the red!

  • 14 years ago

    "Our manufacturer has notified us that due to circumstances beyond their control, the items below will not ship until 04/08/11."

    Really!? WHY have stuff on your site if it's not available in stock! Guess they need to get more from China. I'm tempted to cancel the order... but I like the brown in the rugs. Grr.

  • 14 years ago

    One delay after another! I know it's frustrating. Since the rug comes directly from the manufacturer and not JCP warehouses, they really have no control. Have you by chance checked Overstock for rugs?

    tina

  • 14 years ago

    Ah, life's funny. - I just got done waiting 3 months for fabric, lol. It is what it is I guess.

    I've checked O but nothing really stood out to me and the sizes were either small or too big. On the bright side, if for some reason the rugs don't work, I can return them to the store. If I bought a rug from a place like O, I wouldn't return it.

    Picking up samples today!

  • 14 years ago

    I honestly don't even know what there return policy is - just had seen several on here comment on their rugs.

    Good luck with the samples!
