over the range... ideas?

I'm in the middle of remodeling the kitchen and have run into a snag. The cabinet maker assumed I was doing a range hood... which I'm not because I have a telescoping down draft. So what should I put above my range? It looks like it's missing something... like a hood vent! It currently has smaller shaker cabinets over the range. I can't figure out how to upload a pic of it on here. I was going to add a stainless hood just for looks, but can't seem to get myself to spend $600-$1000 to remedy the situation. I really just want a light and very plain stainless "hood" but don't want it to look cheapo after I've spent a fortune on Thermador appliances. Any suggestions??

I agree a narrow shelf for things you add frequently to your cooking.

I have a JennAire downdraft gas cooktop with no hood...I wanted the space above more open as I am tall (5'11") so I have the smaller Shaker cabinets above with LED lighting. It works well for me.

I thought this was a clever idea for above the stove.

You can not have combustible surfaces closer than 24" above your range. It's a fire hazard If you are planning a shelf, it will need to be stainless or something else fireproof.

    That is nice, Deedles.

Wonderall, I'm guessing you probably have uppers running right up on each side, so you may not like this, but a really good treatment is simply open wall--enough to create an important space that can be decorated as you wish. Care to tear out a couple cabinets to give the stove its due? :)

I have the same situation, I put a tile feature almost to the ceiling there. I have seen people do a bridge across there with lighting in it but I just never got back around to putting anything there. You can get much cheaper hoods at SignatureHardware.com. I'm thinking of just putting a stainless hood there without the vent just for the lighting and look of it. It feels like it needs something so I get where you are coming from. I looked on Houzz.com for photos of cabs above the stove and there are lots of them. I just can't commit, lol. It's been years and I'm still thinking about it. My kitchen still looks current and just got new counter tops. I have the vent that is behind the cooktop that disappears into the counter when down. Good luck!

I agree with ogoopogo. Wine needs to be cool not hot.

What about a faux cabinet or one of those wood hoods. Just
do not put anything inside. Keep it for show.
Or maybe decorative tile and a shelf.

    faux hood

    mmmmm

How about a nice tile treatment on the wall and a fabulous light fixture?

I currently have a (not so fabulous) old lamp hanging over my downdraft stove because without a hood, it's dark.

Why not put a real hood there. Maybe it will trap some of the grease and grime that the downdraft inevitably misses. You could even hook it up and enjoy real ventilation for a change.
