Eggshell

This is a two-part question from a relatively inexperienced painter.

1. Has Benjamin Moore tweaked their paint finish formulas? I painted my kitchen with their eggshell finish (Castleton Mist) last year and I just did my dining room in Merlot Red eggshell, but it looks so much shinier than the kitchen. Does dark paint just look shinier than light paint?

2. After 2 coats, I'm unhappy that you can see roller marks when the light shines on one of the walls and you look at it from a certain angle. (I was a little stingy with the paint for fear of running out.) My husband thinks it looks great and that I'm just being nit-picky. Is there a way to smooth out the finish without applying another coat of paint? Is there a way to mellow out the shine?

Thanks!

they did really early last year; changed all the aquavelvet line (regal) to 100% acrylic base. Their own resins. It was about time they got back on board and changed from their old formulas(vinyl acrylic). Not necessiarly shinier always; other things beside new formulas are the particular red colorants used, the amount of light reflecting and angles of reflection.

That seems to happen sometimes when one tries to stretch the paint far fast the recommended applied mil thickness.
One tends to be as you mentioned a little stingy.

So, at this point in order to remedy this, if you don't have enough paint you will need more and this time load the roller , don't use lots of pressure on the end points, use long smooth continuous sweeps, don't roll back over the same roller track. If your tracks are really noticable (as I have seen them ) you may need to lightly sand those down and reapply corner to corner. best to buy enough paint in the beginning (even if you have some left over) and box it to ensure the same all through.

shine, might change your bulbs or go to a DFV.

I had my whole house painted with BM Aquavelvet Eggshell in 2004. Went and bought two gallons (in different colors) to repaint areas in the house where we had some work done. The sheen was entirely different - much LESS than what it was in 2004. The paint store told me that BM lessened the eggshell sheen because customers complained it was too shiny.

So I contacted BM and they told me it was up to the store to refund my money. The store said no. So here I sit with two cans of paint that I can't use.

That's why I went to another brand at a store that would provide a refund if the paint wasn't right. I know they say you get what you pay for, but I just threw $80. away.

Hmm, that's very interesting about the formulations.

DFV = dead flat varnish? (I'm guessing)

arapaho - I'm sorry about your troubles. Seems like things always change when you were happy with them just as they were.

Thanks for the tips and info. I'll either wait to see how it looks once the furniture and curtains are in or paint a 3rd coat while hubby's out of the house one day. ;)

The roller marks are going to show up with some dark colors when using Regal Eggshell and Regal Matte in certain critical lighting situations. I have tried everything to correct this problem and the only solution I have found is to use Aura.
