Decorating Class Cancelled!

I signed up for an interior decorating course in hopes it would help inspire/help me to decorate my new home (which was built in the 80's) but they called today to say my class has been CANCELLED! And I was so excited. I've always liked older homes and I'm used to decorating an older home, like from the 20's. I like my house but the space feels awkward and I don't know where to begin because it's newer, I think. It doesn't reflect my taste and there are trouble spots I just don't know what to do with. I will start in the living room. We are on a shoestring budget for now and in the corner is a hearth (I guess that's what you call it) without the wood stove. Eventually we'd like to put a gas stove there but for now what do I do with the area? As you can see, they've painted it white but left the slate natural. It looks weird in the room and I don't know what to do with the space. Any ideas? The velvet drapes are from my old house and will most likely be removed as will the brass curtain rods (leftover from previous owner). We just stuck our furniture and pictures we already had in there with no rhyme or reason for now. If there was a nail on the wall we hung something there lol. I need help.

What about some tall plants in decorative pots, along with the boxes you have there? The hearth is gorgeous!

Have you tried moving the tv to that corner to see what it would look like?

That's an idea - my husband suggested a tree. There isn't much light in this room until afternoon but I think plants would be good there. Thank you for the compliment on the hearth. I wish they hadn't painted it. We'll probably take off the wood trim they added.

Maybe a tree, some plants AND the TV! OK I'm getting somewhere.

Do you by chance have an area rug you could place in the room? I think it would add warmth and interest and make the space feel cozier. I'm sure with time you'll become more inspired by your new space and the ideas will start to flow. And, you can always keep posting questions on this forum!

Since you do not have a stove in place right now, I would remove the wood trim pieces and paint the brick the same color you have on the walls. It will be make the space a little more cohesive. If you do not plan on ever getting a stove, I would at least remove the slate to add more room and make it easier to use the space. Right now it is wasted, unusable space. Of course you could remove the brick and slate, but I am sure that would be one messy job, better suited to an empty room. If you can do it, great. It will make the room more open and usable.

I'd paint the brick the same color as your walls, then place a used furniture piece to set the TV on. Something similar to that nice chest by your chair would be great.

We had a home once that had a huge brick fake fireplace in the corner of the room. It wasn't pretty brick, so I painted it the same color as the walls. Looked great. The natural stone sections stood out more, and the brick texture added a little something, but didn't overwhelm the room.

You're off to a pretty start. The room has lots of character. What do you think of perhaps centering that great starburst mirror vertically with the window? Like, lower it about 6 inches?

LOVE the idea of painting it to camouflage the brick. DH said he likes the white (I think he just doesn't want more work!). Keep the ideas coming. I'm seeing a look already. I think the TV and some plants. I'd just hate for someone to trip on the hearth on their way to pressing a button on the TV. Maybe I'll put it close to the front. I'll keep you updated!

"DH said he likes the white (I think he just doesn't want more work!). "

Yeah, my DH was vehemently against the idea too. But one evening, he was away on business, and we had some leftover paint and a brush, and the kids were in bed, and I wasn't too tired, and... and... Long Story Short: he said I was right to paint it!
