Caulking question

I am painting the exterior trim around my colonial style house with

lapped siding. I am wondering about the gaps where the siding and

trim meet. It seems to me that I ought to do something like caulk so the

water does not run behind the trim pieces?

The gaps are pretty wide at the top. It seems to me that the correct way to have installed the trim would have been to cut away the siding and then put up the trim boards. But the contractor who did that particular job was

excellent and also the painter who did the first paint coats.
