Look at this article in Remodelista, the two lights shown are pendant and clip-on. The pendants are used next to the sink, clip ons are on shelves.

Another option would be track lighting.

Depending on your layout, a mix of types of fixtures might work. Maybe cans on the perimiter, pendandts or track lighting over an island, sconces at windows or doorways?

I have a small kitchen with very few uppers so I did cans as task lighting with a single overhead ceiling fixture in the middle for non-task lighting. I didn't do pendants because I couldn't center them over my windows due to rafters so there would have been a lot of pendants in a small space.

Aside from posting a layout with a lighting plan here and asking for advice, I would go to a regular lighting showroom and have them help you with your options. That's what I did and they were very helpful and their fixtures were at least 25% below internet pricing. Plus when we found one of the lights was broken when the electrician went to install it they drove a replacement over while he was still at my house so I didn't have to have the electrician come out again.
